1 The Foundation Phase there are 7 areas In England it is called the Foundation Stage and has 6 areas

2 The seven areas are:- PSE Physical (gross and fine motor skills) Language and literature Mathematics Knowledge & understanding of the world Creative Bilingualism

3 Group Activity Exchange ideas in groups of the different things you do in your setting to promote each of the seven areas Give some examples of some activities for each area How does it help the children’s development

4 The National Curriculum Has four key stages For children aged 5 (7) – 16years Has four core subjects (three in England) In England the children are tested with Stats, this is not done in Wales In school we are inspected by Estyn who make sure we met the National Occupational Standards (NOS).

5 Planning Long term – may be 12monthsMedium term – can be a term or half an termShort term – this can be a week or a day After observation and assessment planning needs to take place and your planning may need to change to met the needs of the children

10 Importance of planning Clear idea of what is happening both long and short term Can research information before hand Organise resources People can take over if plans are to hand Make sure you are covering all the seven areas Health and safety issues Are aims and objectives covered

11 Planning Think about your setting over the last twelve months and what long term planning has happened over the last 12 months This half terms topic is ‘The seaside’ Break this down into a medium terms plans for the next 6 weeks. How will it go into all 7 areas of the Foundation Phase.

12 Medium planning for the Seaside (Group activity) Each group has a different area of the Foundation Phase Plan for the next 6 weeks what you are going to do so children have a wide experience of your area Break it down into week 1 etc Use both outdoor and indoor activities

13 Short term planning Now put a plan together for the week about the seaside Making sure it is exciting, enjoyable, challenging and meets all needs How does it fit into the Foundation Phase (including ICT) Differentiation, alternative communication and the support needed.

14 The importance of Play When planning always think about the importance of play The Foundation Phase is very much play orientated and child led Allowing the children to plan is an excellent idea There are different types of play, what are they, try to include them in your planning
