Objective(s): SWBAT explain how rocks change from one form to another in the rock cycle. Relevance: Over long periods of time, our Earth has drastically changed and continues to change even if we don’t see it through the rock cycle. Four-Square Do Now 5 min Silently fill in the table on your daily packet What are the three types of rocks? Which type of rock is formed from extreme heat and pressure? What type of rock is formed from cooled lava? What type of rock is formed after sediments have been deposited, compacted, and cemented over long periods of time?

4 Interactive Video What is rock made of?
How is sedimentary rock changed into igneous rock? How is the magma/lava changed into igneous rock? How does the sedimentary rock look different than igneous rock? How is weathering different from erosion?

5 The Rock Cycle The series of processes that change one type of rock to another type of rock is called the rock cycle. How might an igneous rocks form into a sedimentary rock? How might a sedimentary rock form into a metamorphic rock?

6 The Rock Cycle

7 Starburst Lab 40 min The rocks that make up the Earth are constantly being recycled. One form of rock is changed into another form of rock through certain processes of nature that occur over time. In groups, you will perform a lab in which you will demonstrate an understanding of this cycle.

8 Starburst Lab Materials (per group)
40 min Materials (per group) 3 different colored starburst candies. Scissors Aluminum pie pan Hot plate Markers or colored pencils Foil Heavy books Rock cycle diagram

9 Starburst Lab Procedure
40 min Procedure Take your three different colored Starbursts and cut them into as many small pieces as you can. Put them into a pile and draw what you observe in your sediments box on the rock cycle diagram. Pick up the “sediments” and gently smush them together so they all form into one big piece. Set this piece down and draw what you observe in the sedimentary rock box on the rock cycle diagram.

10 Starburst Lab Procedure
40 min Procedure Now take all your “sedimentary rock” and warm it in your hands for awhile. Place the paper and book on top of the warm “sedimentary rock” and press down on it. Fold this in half and press down on it some more. Draw what you observe in the metamorphic rock box on the rock cycle diagram. Place your “metamorphic rock” on the aluminum pie pan. Turn on the hot plate and place the pie pan on the hot plate. BE CAREFUL. Observe the “metamorphic rock” as it melts. Draw what you observe in the magma box on your rock cycle diagram.

11 Starburst Lab Procedure
40 min Procedure Take your pan off the hot plate, being careful not to spill the “magma.” Set it on the table and observe it as it cools and hardens. Draw what you observe in the igneous rock box on your rock cycle diagram. Complete the conclusion and analysis questions.

12 Independent Practice 25 min Independently, you will answer the conclusion and analysis questions over the starburst lab in your guided notes. Use the notes you took on the rock cycle from the lab to answer your questions. Think critically. During independent practice scholars should be completely silent and working individually. It’s okay if scholars are not given the full 25 minutes to work – just give them as much time is available. Please leave about 5 minutes of class for the exit ticket and to pack up.

13 Exit Ticket Complete the exit ticket silently. Turn in as you leave!
