3 Today’s LessonSkill Development: Art@Booksin Weaving is one of the most ancient forms of human creativity. Baskets and textiles would not have been possible without weaving. We will introduce Kente Cloth and weave a mat inspired by their patterns. Introduction to weaving. Today you will learn: To weave a mat To create a design and execute into an art piece. 4 What is weaving? Art@Booksin In weaving, the yarn is wrapped on a frame called a loom and pulled taut vertically. This is known as the warp. Another strand is worked back and forth wrapping over and under the warp. This wrapped yarn is called the weft. Most art and commercial textiles are made by this process. Kente Inspired Ribbon weave

5 Kente Cloth is the best known of all the African textiles. They are famous for their bold multicolored patterns, bright colors and geometric shapes. Art@Booksin Kente Inspired Ribbon weave

6 Art@Booksin Wrapper (Kente) 1901/50 African Art – Kente Cloth in the Asante tradition Kente inspired Ribbon weave Today Kente cloth is worn by more than just kings. Asante people wear untailored wrappers or clothing made from Kente cloth as their best dress and on special occasions such as weddings and funerals.

7 Let’s get started.. Supplies Needed : Large paper Ruler Paper strips Plain colors Pattern / designs Ribbon fabric strips Tacky glue Brushes (for glue) Scissors Pencil Art@Booksin Kente inspired Ribbon weave

8 Process: Art@Booksin Fold the construction paper in half horizontally. Draw a line about 1” from open en of folded paper – this is the limit of cutting. From the fold, cut an even number of slits in the fold. Unfold the paper, lay it flat. Begin weaving the strips “weft” (over- under-over). Glue the ends of strips to hold in place. Mix paper pattern and ribbon strips until entire paper is woven Kente Ribbon weave
