2 1. Manifest Destiny Americans believed that God intended for them to have all the western lands to the shores of the Pacific.

3 2. Mormons A group of settlers led by Brigham Young that settled in Utah near the great Salt Lake.

4 3. The Alamo An abandoned mission that was the site of an important battle for the Independence of Texas. This defeat enraged Americans and Texans.

5 4. Battle of San Jacinto A twenty minute battle where the entire Mexican Army of fourteen hundred was either killed or captured. Texas gained its independence as a result.

6 5. Annexation The formal process of being added to the Union.

7 6. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo The treaty officially ending the Mexican- American War.

8 7. Mexican Cession The territory consisting of California, Nevada, and Utah plus parts of Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico that became a part of the U.S. as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

9 8. Gadsden Purchase The narrow strip of Mexican land on the border of New Mexico and Arizona that was purchased by the United States for $10 million as a possible southern transcontinental railroad route.

10 9. Forty-niners The name given to men who came to California in 1949 searching for gold.

11 10. Popular Sovereignty Where people living in a territory could decide whether they wanted to have slavery or not.

12 11. Doughfaces A group of Northern Democrats that did not oppose the proslavery position. They wanted to let the South handle its own affairs.

13 12. Bear Flag Revolution A rebellion led by John Fremont that allowed California to fall easily into the hands of the Americans.

14 13. Lone Star Republic The name of the independent Texas republic.

15 14. Mountain Men About six hundred in number, these men lived in the Rockies and trapped furs. They marked the best routes, explored the courses of the rivers, and found major passes through the mountains.

16 15. Compromise of 1850 1.California was admitted as a free state. 2.The rest of the land gained through the Mexican Cession was divided into the New Mexico and Utah Territories and allowed to decide the slavery question by popular sovereignty. 3.A stricter fugitive slave law was passed. 4.The slave trade was outlawed in Washington D.C. 5.Texas was paid for giving up some of its land.
