Here’s Your Earth Science SOL Breakdown... what you’re going to face on May 23rd, 2012 Geology … 60 Total Questions 10 Field Questions … will not count for or against you … just there to shake your confidence!!! 21 Questions Oceanography, Meteorology & Groundwater … 10 Questions Astronomy … 9 Questions Scientific Investigation … Charts, Graphs, Pictures, usually the answer is right in front of you… These are the ones you can’t afford to miss! 10 Questions 50 Questions that count!

OCEANOGRAPHY 1.A 2.C 3.B 4.C 5.A 6.A 7.A 8.A

SOL REVIEW OCEANOGRAPHY Read each fact carefully and then be prepared to answer the questions that follow NO TALKING GIVE THIS YOUR TOTAL ATTENTION HERE WE GO

Today our atmosphere consists of 1 st there were lots of volcanoes that shot water vapor into the atmosphere Eventually clouds formed and it rained long enough to fill up the low spots which became our oceans Earth….the Blue Planet Remember earth has not always had oceans! How did they form? In the oceans algae developed which put OXYGEN into our atmosphere-making it possible for life to survive OUTSIDE the ocean… this process is photosynthesis Nitrogen…78% Oxygen…21% Trace Gases…1% The salinity of our ocean averages 35 parts NaCl (salt) per 1,000 parts water Sea level rises when ice caps melt Estuaries, like the Chesapeake Bay, are where fresh water and salt water mix...lots of life here Most energy transfer (water warming up) occurs at the surface… the deep stays at a constant cool temperature Waves are made by wind

The Gulf Stream is a surface current off the east coast of the US There are 2 types of CURRENTS in our oceans created by the wind blowing across the water created by temperature differences in water SURFACE DEEP aka Density or Turbidity Surface currents are named Upwelling (density current) occurs when cold water with nutrients is brought to the surface …this is where fish like to feed! The oceans DRIVE our weather patterns because the oceans hold heat Surface Currents are responsible for bringing warmer temperatures to areas that would otherwise be colder OCEAN FLOOR FEATURES A B C D E F Continental Slope Seamounts Abyssal Plain Mid-Ocean Ridge Volcano Continental Shelf G Trench We use sonar to map the ocean floor

Can You Answer the Following Questions? Bodies of water where salt water mixes with fresh water are called oceansseamounts estuaries guyots Waves and surface currents are created by gravitywind density differences rotation of Earth What is used to map the features of the ocean floor? Doppler radar SonarLaser Seismology What type of current is not shown in the diagram surfacedensitydeepturbidity Which type of current has upwelling? surfacedensity What is responsible for upwelling? radiationconductionconvection
