Physical Education Philosophy Our major goal through selected sports and activities is to build character in our students. Through dedication, discipline and dignity our aim is to promote an overall healthy lifestyle and self-worth.

Physical Education Schedule & Selection Physical Education classes will meet every other day for two terms equaling one semester. Students will partake in three Units/Activities each term. A Unit will consist of approximately seven classes (six activity classes and one written test day). For each unit teachers will offer multiple Sports/Activities, students will select the activity which they prefer and feel they can have the most success with. We have found that the selection process allows students to personalize their curriculum, more over simulating an individual fit lifestyle after high school.

Graduation Requirements All high school students need to pass four semesters of Physical Education, typically one semester per year. If a student does not pass P.E. then the course will need to be retaken in a subsequent semester. Physical Education is worth 2.5 quality points per semester.

Medical Policies/ Information All students must have a physician’s note or a note from the school nurse to be excused from active participation in physical education. Such students whom cannot physically partake in class will be asked to complete alternative physical education assignments, in order to receive credit for these classes. All such work should be passed in no later than the day of the written exam for each unit.

Absence Policies In the event of an absence, a student is required to complete a make-up assignment, thus giving them credit for that day. All make-up work should be passed in within one week of the absence and prior to the unit’s written exam. The Milford high school handbook states that students may not miss any more than four classes from an every other day class such as physical education. Upon the fifth absence students will have tripped the policy and not receive credit for the course. Numerical averages will be retained for record keeping purposes.

Grading Policy for Physical Education 25% Written Exams (Cognitive) 25%Skills Grade (Psychomotor) 25% Participation & Performance (Affective) 25% P.E. Clothing Grade (Preparation)

Grading Policy for Physical Education Written Exams (Cognitive) Each unit will conclude with a written exam which covers content presented over the course of the unit. Also, all test information is provided in the form of a study guide available prior to the exam.

Grading Policy for Physical Education Skills Grade (Psychomotor) Students are expected to demonstrate required skills to the best of their ability all students will be graded on an individual basis by means of teacher observation.

Grading Policy for Physical Education Participation & Performance (Affective) Students should participate in all of the activities to the best of their ability, maintain a positive attitude, become involved in class discussions and turn in any worksheets related to class activities. Participation will also be evaluated on a daily basis.

Grading Policy for Physical Education P.E. Clothing Grade (Preparation) Students should come to class on time prepared to participate in the designated activities. All units require students to change into appropriate attire for physical activity and wear sneakers. Preparation will be evaluated on a daily basis. Students that are “non-dressers” become a nuisance and distraction to teachers and classmates and a disruption to the learning process in Physical Education.
