1 Solar system © KCL. WCED. PENTECH. 2002 1. Distances to the planets 1. You will need 6 sheets of A4 paper. 3. Cut the sheets into 4 strips 2. Mark four strips4. Stick 4 strips together to give you a 1.05 metre strip of paper 5. Stick the six 1.05 metre strips together to give you a 6 metre strip of paper. Mercury@58mm SUN diameter 1.4mm Jupiter@770mm Mars@230mm Earth@150mm Venus@110mm Saturn@1400mm Uranus@2900mm Neptune@4400mm Pluto@5900mm 1.05m 6m 7. Use the information below to mark the distance to the planets on your 6m strip

2 Solar system © KCL. WCED. PENTECH. 2002 Sizes of the planets 1. You will need 6 sheets of A4 paper.2. Glue five sheets end to end to give you a strip 1.4m long 1.4m 3. On the sixth sheet cut out circles as shown below. Saturn@ 110mm Jupiter@ 130mm Neptune@ 46mm Uranus@ 45mm Venus@ 12mm Earth@ 13mm Mars@ 6.3mm Pluto@ 5.4mm Venus@ 4.6mm SUNSUN 4. To get the correct distances, at this scale, pin the 1.4m sun to the wall. At this scale, Mercury, the nearest planet is................ 58 metres from your paper SUN on the wall. Pluto, the furthest planet is......................................................................................................................5.9 kilometres away! 2.

3 Solar system © KCL. WCED. PENTECH. 2002 3. The Solar system with the Sun, our star, at the centre. We see our spiral galaxy made of millions of stars across the night sky as the Milky Way. Strings of galaxies rushing through space were produced after the Big Bang. Write a poem about our place in space. You may want to use the idea of size and scale, or perhaps the idea of how one thing fits into another, or perhaps the idea of the Big Bang that set the universe going. Our place in Space Your task Looking across space we are looking back in time. Light arriving on Earth now left the Andromeda galaxy, our nearest neighbouring galaxy, 2 million years ago. A background hiss of radiowaves tells us that there was a Big Bang.
