2 India is a subcontinent -it juts (pops) out from the continent of Asia

3 India is also a Peninsula -This means that it is surrounded on 3 sides by water

4 India is separated into 3 regions The well watered Northern plain (farming) The dry arid Deccan plateau (desert) The coastal plains (Good for fish and trade)

5 India relies on monsoons. The monsoons are winds that bring rains.

6 When the monsoon brings wind and rain to India it allows the soil to become fertile

7 The Himalaya Mountains separate India From China.

8 The Mountains serve as a natural barrier to India - This blocks them in and protects them from invaders, MOST the time

9 Khyber Pass is the valley allowed travelers to enter India.

11 The Indus River begins in the Himalayas. When the snows melt, the river floods.

12 The Indus River is an important river in Indian history. It was the birthplace of South Asia’s earliest civilization.

13 The Indus River The name “India” is derived from the Indus River. An early civilization developed along the banks of the Indus River.

14 The Ganges River is an important river in India. It is a sacred or holy river for Hindus.

19 The buildings of Mohenjo-Daro were also carefully planned.

20 Urban Planning Urban planning refers to the careful planning of a city. In Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro, every brick in every city was exactly the same size during a period of time. Like modern cities, buildings had to conform to government standards.
