Robo en la noche Chapter Summaries
Chapter one summary Makenna and her father (Dr. Parker) are on a plane (el avión), flying to Costa Rica. They are flying all the way to this exotic country because they are moving there! Makenna is not too excited about this, for she will miss her sister (su hermana), her friends, and her horse, Bender (su caballo). Her mother however, died three years ago, in a fatal car accident. She thinks to herself “Estoy completamente sola”, or: I am completely alone.
Chapter six summary The next morning Makenna is in the big house with Margarita and Ricardo. She is making breakfast with Margarita. The three of them start discussing the weather, for it is a really nice day out. Then, out of the blue, Ricardo asks Makenna how she likes living at the ranch. Makenna tells him that she really enjoys it and then she explains her new job of being Mimi’s caretaker/mom. Ricardo says that if Mimi never learns to fly, she can live at the ranch with them. Then Ricardo shares his opinion on the bird smugglers. He says that he is disgusted that all the robbers want is money. He explains that the criminals steal eggs and baby birds from the jungle and that they sell them for a lot of money. Ricardo also says that robbing runs in families, and that the family at the ranch works with MINAE to prevent family robberies. Makenna sees that Ricardo takes his job very serious, and she likes him, for he is a very kind man. He continues and says that once the birds at the ranch are three months old, they can be released into the wild. Makenna realizes now why her dad enjoys his job so much. Makenna thanks them for breakfast and says “¡Pura Vida!” or ‘Pure life’, a common Costa Rican expression. Ricardo tells her that she is already a “tica”/ Costa Rican. Makenna says thanks for breakfast, leaves the house and heads over to the house with all the birds.
