2 Programme Welcome What do your children need? Reading at home- strategies for before, during and after reading Reading in class Year 2 SATs Looking at resources and asking questions.

3 What do your children need?  To hear texts read aloud.  To share books.  To talk about their reading.  To take turns in reading.  To build up confidence and experience.  To choose books freely.  To read familiar texts over and over again.  Texts that interest them.  Texts that intrigue them.  Texts that engage them.  Texts that have repetition in them.  Texts that have rhythm and rhyme.  Texts that have powerful language.  Texts that have familiar narrative structures.  Texts that have characters/places/th emes they can identify with.

4 Reading at home Before reading: Have you seen this book before? Why did you choose it? What is the title of the book? What sort of book do you think it’s going to be? Who is the author of the book? Who is the illustrator? Have you read any books by this author or illustrator? Do you think this is a fiction or non-fiction book? What made you decide? What did you think about when you were choosing this book? What do you think will happen in this book? (fiction) What information do you think will be in this book? (non-fiction)

5 During reading What has happened so far in this book? Is the story so far as you expected? Can you tell me anything about a character/ the characters? Which is your favourite character so far? Why? Where is the story taking place? What do you think……….means? Do the illustrations tell us any more about the story than we can get from the words?

6 After reading Did you enjoy the story? Was there anything that you did not like? Which part of the story did you enjoy most? Have you read the book before? Did you enjoy it more this time? Why? What did you like about the way the book was illustrated? Can you show me a favourite illustration? Can you describe a favourite part, or exciting/funny moment in the story? Are there any repetitive words or phrases that you remember from the story? Tell me more about the characters in the story? Which was your favourite character and why? If you had written this book, how would you have made it different? Did you like the ending? Did it end as you expected? Would you read this book again? Would you tell your friends about it and recommend it?

7 Reading in class All Year Two classrooms have their own library or book corners which children can access throughout the day. All children read in a variety of contexts throughout the week such as sharing big books, story time, guided reading and reading workshop. All children will have opportunities to read with an adult in school.

8 General Strategies used in School Daily whole class story sessions where adults read to children.  Daily whole class shared reading and writing sessions each week using a big book.  Use of visuals to engage children.  Guided reading activities – at least once per week per child.  Weekly visits to the library to make own choices.  Sending home of story book from the library and the reading scheme for parents/carers to read with/to their child.  A well resourced book corner for children to use during child initiated time.  Sentence and word level activities.

9 Year 2 SATs Children in Year 2 are assessed through National Tests and Teacher Assessment in reading. Teacher assessment is now the main focus for end of Key Stage 1 assessment and reporting. It is carried out as part of the teaching and learning in the classroom. The level of attainment will be based on the teacher’s assessment of your child’s learning in class and takes account of the results from reading test (SATs).
