6 Mission The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) serves the higher education needs of a rapidly growing, international, multicultural population in the South Texas Region. The University preserves, transmits and creates knowledge to serve the cultural, civic, and economic advancement of the region and the state. The University provides students advanced instruction in academic programs offered through innovative delivery systems that lead to professional certification, and baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees. Through teaching, research, creative activity and public service, UTPA prepares students for lifelong learning and leadership roles in the state, nation and world community.

7 Vision The vision of The University of Texas-Pan American is to be a premier institution of higher education. As a major, nationally recognized Hispanic-serving institution, the University will be a leader in addressing the needs of a culturally diverse society through discoveries and innovations of global significance.

8 Six Goals Provide students a quality education that they complete in a timely fashion. Identify and focus on targeted research relevant to South Texas, emphasizing collaborative partnerships and entrepreneurship. Enhance engagement with community constituents to meet challenges and maximize opportunities. Collaborate with primary, secondary, and post-secondary schools to increase access, participation and success in higher education. Leverage the University’s border location as a gateway for the Americas to initiate projects infused with global perspectives. Optimize the effectiveness and efficiency, especially of processes that affect students, staff and faculty, consistent with high quality organizational standards.

20 Community Involvement UTPA’s Community Engagement Office with its various centers provides: Small businesses with start-up and growth assistance such as business training, free and confidential counseling, research, planning and assistance with procurement and trade. Businesses and communities with data, information and economic impact studies. Counties and local communities with Asset management services. Survey construction and analysis services. Advanced manufacturing, research and education initiatives. Training sessions on leadership, census and other national and regional data resources. Outreach, training and technical assistance for farmers and ranchers, socially-disadvantaged minority agricultural producers.

Ranked 5 th highest public school in Texas (Forbes America’s Best Colleges 2011) 3 rd in nation for bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanics (Hispanic Outlook, 2011) 3 rd in nation for master’s degrees awarded to Hispanics (Hispanic Outlook, 2011)

26 Points of Pride UTPA ranks 1st in the nation for awarding degrees to Hispanics in Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Professions (Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, 2011). UTPA ranks 9th in the nation for providing Hispanic applicants to Medical Schools in 2009 (Diverse Issues in Higher Education, October 28, 2010). In August 2011, two faculty members, received the Regents' Outstanding Teaching Awards, the Board of Regents' highest honor for faculty who demonstrate extraordinary classroom performance and innovation in undergraduate instruction. FibeRio Technology Corporation, the first company formed by UTPA won the Silver Award March 17 at the World’s Best Technology (WBT) Showcase in Arlington, Texas.
