1. Set a family schedule Carve out some time each day and each week to enjoy together. Even 10 minutes can make a difference and kids will look forward to this special time. Plan family meals together as often as possible. Schedule downtime or “activity free” nights each week. Remember: It’s okay to say “no” to an activity or event! What things do you/your family do to manage your schedule?

2. Make quality time count Turn off phones and devices. Leave work at work. Your kids deserve your full attention and you deserve a break from outside distractions and stress! Create a “drop box” - put all mobile and gaming devices in it until after dinner. Use time in the car or at the grocery store to ask your child about his or her day or what they are thinking about. Build in 15-20 minutes at the end of your work day (or before the kids come home) to come to a stopping point and get ready to focus on family. How do you balance work, life, family, friends, spirit?

3. Take good care of yourself Set an example! Are you showing them how a person should care for his or her body, mind and relationships? Schedule time without kids to do something you enjoy. Make plans with a friend or family member. Spend time outside to get fresh air and reduce your stress. Ask for help when you need it. It is not a sign of weakness! How do you practice self care?

4. Talk about needs vs. wants Talk to your kids about what the family needs versus what family members want. Setting limits on spending can reduce stress and teach financial responsibility to your children. Talk about spending choices you make as a family. Work together toward a “want”, like a special trip. Allow children to choose a “want” and then let them earn it through chores or helping neighbors. Do not substitute time with your children (a need) by giving them things (wants). Focus on the time you DO have together and make that special What are the things your family needs? What are the things your family wants?

5. Create a family identity Give kids a sense of purpose and belonging. Tell them what you love about them. Share your beliefs. Talk about what boundaries and rules are important in your family. This can help them make healthy decisions and feel good about themselves. Talk to your children about positive character traits like respect, honesty and responsibility. Engage your children in their community - volunteer together! Be firm in your beliefs. When you make a tough decision, talk with your kids about how your beliefs helped you. What is your family identity?
