The Digestive System Food must be broken down into building blocks before it can be absorbed by cells. The digestive system helps break food down.

Ingestion The consumption of a substance, through the mouth. ▫ Eating and Drinking.

Digestion The process of breaking down food by mechanical action and enzymatic action. Time varies on person and food type. ▫ Could be approx. 20 hours to pass from mouth through to elimination of feces.

Digestion Mechanical Action: ▫ Physical forces. ▫ Using your teeth. Enzymatic Action: ▫ Chemical reactions. ▫ Using saliva and stomach acids.

Metabolism The process of using broken down food for energy.

Metabolism Catabolic Reaction: ▫ Breaks down food so the nutrients can go where they need to. Anabolic Reaction: ▫ Smaller, broken down pieces are used by the cells to take care of the body.

Metabolism Metabolic Rate: ▫ How fast your body breaks down your food. A fast metabolism is known to keep weight down. ▫ Can be a problem if someone is trying to gain weight and/or muscle mass.
