Anti-Corruption Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

As GCNB continues to grow, it is key for the Network to identify a clear ‘raison d’etre’ shared with and by its key stakeholders and continue to have an impactful value proposition that will work in the Belgian context in order to promote and inspire the implementation of the 10 UN Global Compact Principles. "GCNB has had a good start up phase and gained recognition and momentum rapidly" Where are we now ?

This process was initiated with the aim of defining our Value Proposition and a corresponding Action Plan in order to adapt the role of the GCNB to its new circumstances and context. It can be summarized as follows: Define the priority focus areas and themes Explore the main needs expressed by the members in order to develop appropriate services offering Explore the Belgian CSR landscape to assess different partnership opportunities Define an appropriate governance structure of the network to implement the new Action Plan Determining Value Proposition and Action Plan

1st Step: GCNB assessment, Survey, interviews and desk research 1-MEMBERSHIP SURVEY: We asked our members, as experts, for their reasons to join, expected benefits, relevance of each of the 10 UN Global Compact Principles, potential members’ contribution… 2-INTERVIEWS: We interviewed different European Global Compact Networks in order to compare and analyze the role of Local Networks from a broader perspective 3- DESK RESEARCH: Desk research on the profiles of the main Belgian CSR organizations cross checking their activities and the 10 principles in order to define gaps and opportunities for collaboration

Conclusions Phase 1 Reasons for Joining Increase external trust in company Establish links with the UN Local/global dimension 3 sustainability dimensions Principles that score high Environment Human Rights Anti corruption Discrimination Cross cutting Challenges Business Case/ higher management support How to measure Adressing entire value chain Expected Activities Networking/updates on UNGC global Learning Dialogue on sensitive issues Partnership projects

Conclusions Continued Rather than adding new initiatives or networks, the Belgian CSR landscape is going to benefit most from coordination and smart cooperation among existing initiatives The international (supply chain) dimension of human rights, labour rights, and anti-corruption; as well as the ‘how to’ of implementing UN Global Compact principles are areas that deserve further attention

2nd STEP: Our Value Proposition “The United Nations Global Compact is a global call to companies around the world to align their strategies and operations with 10 universally accepted principles. The Global Compact Network Belgium (GCNB) has the mission to promote and anchor the 10 UN Global Compact Principles within the Belgian national context. We are an impactful, agenda-setting, learning and partnering network organization. Inspiring and facilitating its members to translate global issues down to the local business context and being the local partner for giving voice to global sustainability challenges. Thereby we contribute to the development of a sustainable Belgian economic and business model that in turn feeds back into developing a sustainable international society.”

In practice: 3 focus areas 1.Learning through Content Chapter working groups relating to the 10 principles 2.Impact through collaboration Structuring our partnerships Complementary to what already exists in the Belgian landscape 3.Inspiring& facilitating members through connecting local with global and vice versa Translating UN Global initiatives to our local network agenda setting of global issues at local level Communicate local challenges and progress to our global network

Content: Reach out to existing and new members to head and sit on the different principle chapters Share our expertise in local initiatives related to the 10 principles Structured partnership Explore collaboration with existing initiatives achieving structured partnership agreements: focus on impact and efficiency; avoid duplication of efforts Local/Global Enhance existing communication, website, newsletter, UNGC NY Take part in local initiatives such as the Post 2015 agenda and National Action Plan for Human Rights Focus on actions

Overall objective Achieving scale Improve participant engagement Sustainable funding model So that we 1.Mainstream the Global Compact’s Ten Principles in business strategy and operations 2.Catalyze business action in support of UN goals and issues, with emphasis on partnerships and collective action.
