Agenda Horizon 2020 and Eurostars Turning idea into a project proposal Partnerships creation Discussion - Q&As

Horizon 2020 and Eurostars  EU funding opportunities  Instruments  Targets  Areas

 Horizon 2020 – overview European Research & Innovation program for 2014-2020 with financing of 77 billion Euro Supports Europe 2020, Innovation Union & European Research Area: - Fight the economic crisis, invest in future jobs and growth - Address key issues for people – safety, energy and environment - Strengthen EU position - research, innovation and technology Focus: - Excellent Science, Industrial Leadership, Societal Challenges

How to turn your idea into a project proposal ?  Methodology to define and plan R&D projects  H2020 and Eurostars  Process before starting to write the proposal

 Methodology to define and plan R&D projects in H2020 Targets depend on the entity Academia – excellent research SME – close to market, innovation, new products and services, agile Large industry – leader, pilots, testing Answer the question: Do you have an idea for a new product, service or how to progress science in a given field ? Or rather you have the tools, know-how and contacts to support others ? Leadership vs participation Newcomer vs. Established in EU programs Track record Can define projects and organize international teams or rather prefer to be led by others ? How your idea fits to the funding programs and calls ?

 Process before starting to write the proposal Understand your own targets first and what you want to achieve Read the areas (ICT, Health, Energy, etc.) and fit your idea into their framework – each area has its specific targets and themes Once placed in the area, find a suitable call – there is a common process in the EU Commisssion to construct „Calls” and their structure Study carefully the corresponding Work Programme in a respective area – this is a must to understand the targets !

 Methodology to define and plan R&D projects in Eurostars Targets depend on the entity R&D performing SME – can lead or participate SME – can only participate Answer the question: Do you have an idea for a new product or service ? It can be an extension to the current product/service portfolio. Or rather you have the tools and know-how to support others ? Are you an R&D performing SME ? Leadership vs participation Track record Can define projects and organize international teams or rather prefer to be led by others ? Important: after maximum of 36 months of development, bring results to the market within next 24 months

Think and analyze your products/services portfolio. Would you think of a completely new product ? Or maybe you can think of novel extensions/upgrades to your existing products/services ? Who else would you need to develop your ideas into a new compelling product/services offering ? You need at least one more SME; are universities/research organisations necessary ? How to turn your idea into a project proposal ?

STEP 1 Having read the Call, answer the questions of how your idea fits into the objectives, target outcomes, and expected impacts STEP 2 Decide if you want to coordinate or become a partner in a consortium STEP 3 If you can manage to plan all the work and have a good track record – coordinate – i.e. create a consortium and lead proposal writing; if not, try to join a consortium that targets the call with similar ideas; turn for help to well connected professionals with know-how in the area Analyse your own idea ! Only then you can start writing a proposal !

Partnerships creation  H2020 and Eurostars  Process

 H2020 Usually a minimum of 3 entities from 3 different MS or associated countries are required Size of consortia depends on the project scheme, between 5 and 20 SME Instrument – only 1 SME is enough !  Eurostars At least 2 SMEs are needed from two different Eurostars countries Usually 3-4 partners in the consortia

 Partnerships creation Exploit your own contacts Invite partners onboard Join growing consortia Attend information days and events organized by the Commission Present your idea Present your portfolio Get to know other interested parties Attend conferences Present yourself Get to know partners Consult your idea with a right Project Officer in the Commission – follow his advice

 What to do to maximize chances of success ? Develop your idea in detail before you start writing – what are the targets? How do they fit into Calls expectations; what is the novelty? How can you organize the work plan? What partners do you need? How will you exploit and disseminate the results? Consult and even develop your idea and the proposal with an expert that will help you define all the aspects and write an excellent proposal Take strong partners onboard, have a right mix of partners

Thank You
