1 Tempe Center for the Arts Masters of Illusion: Unveiling the Mystery of Trompe L’Oeil Sneak Peek at the Artists and the Magic May 3 – Aug. 2, 2008

2 About the exhibition at Tempe Center for the Arts: The boundaries between trompe l’oeil and photo-realism can be confusing even for professionals. But, perhaps, the exhibition and these magicians unveil some of the mystery without giving away too many of the secrets. The majority of the 20 artists in the exhibition are from the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Thanks to the city of Tempe and the artists, educators, private collectors, businesses and local galleries who have made this exhibition possible.

3 Illusion: A deceptive or misleading image or idea. Trompe L‘Oeil: A French term meaning "trick the eye.“ Usually refers to two-dimensional and life-size art that looks realistic up close and from a distance. Photo Realism: Art that appears nearly photographic. Subject matter can be from life or from photographs and appear life-size or not.

4 “…trompe artists toy with spectators' seeing to raise questions about the nature of art and perception.” www.ArtLex.com
