1 Ch 12 Chemical Reactions

2 Ch 12 Lesson 1- Lab Objective Law of conservation of mass Warm-Up Does a boiled egg have more mass than a cooked egg?

3 Launch Lab Pg 419- Yes you need to copy all of this down and complete the lab. Then answer the follow up questions and clean up. Leave your station how you found it. – you will be graded on clean up and conduct as well Purpose: To observe the conservation of mass during a chemical change Materials: graduated cylinder, 25ml solution A, 1-L self sealing bag, stoppered test tube containing 25 ml of solution B, balance, and paper towel. Safety: wear goggles Procedure: 1. Use the graduated cylinder to add 25 ml of Solution A to the bag. 2. Use the graduated cylinder to measure out 25 ml of solution B, place it into the test tube and stopper that tube. Place the tube inside of the bag. 3. Seal the bag, wipe it with the towel and record the mass of the bag 4. Without opening the bag, remove the stopper of the tube. Mix the liquid. 5. Record your observations and then re-weigh the mass of the bag AFTER the chemical reaction has occurred. Data: create a table that includes the mass of the bag, BEFORE and AFTER the reaction. Record your observations in this section (use correct units- yes that is part of your grade) Conclusion: Answer using a complete sentence (yes that is part of your grade) 1.What indicators of a chemical reaction did you observe? 2.Did the mass BEFORE and AFTER the reaction change? 3.Calculate your percent error. 5% or less is acceptable. 4.Does the mass of a cooked egg differ from that of an uncooked egg? Make a prediction. 5.Get both types of eggs and find out. Record the mass of each and then answer the question again? 6.What law are we experimenting with here? 7. Write the law.
