2. The words to the Declaration of Independence say “All MEN are created equal.” But what about America’s women? Women worked alongside men while also raising families, yet they had no voice and no rights when it came to their own lives.

3. As life changed in the Industrial Age, and women were freed from the day- long hardships of life on the farm, many were finally able to attend school. By the 1870’s several women’s colleges had opened their doors, and with increased educational opportunities came a new awareness of how unfair life was for women. In the 1830’s women had been in the forefront of the abolitionist movement to end slavery. Many of those women began to see that their own lives were not much better. They, too, had no voice in government and as a result had no rights. Women began meeting to figure out a way to change the laws. They wanted to vote and were willing to do whatever it took to make that happen – even if it meant getting arrested.

7. Fighting for Equality Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton led the fight for women’s suffrage. They met for the first time in 1851, and devoted their lives to the fight for equal rights for women. Both women were outspoken and fierce. Anthony was even arrested for trying to vote. Their struggles inspired new generations of suffragettes, but sadly neither women were able to vote. It would take more than 70 years for their dreams to come true.

9. In Her Own Words Ernestine Rose, a suffragette wrote: “Carry out the republican principle of universal suffrage, or strike it from your banners and substitute ‘Freedom and Power to one half of society, and Submission and Slavery to the other.’”

10. Women are People Too! By the early 1900’s women from all across the country, and from all walks of life began to join the battle. They marched in parades, picketed the White House, and held rallies. A few women ended up in prison for their actions, then held hunger strikes while jailed, which swayed public sympathies even more. Women’s long fight for the right to vote ended in 1920 with the passage of the 19 th Amendment.
