AGENDA – 12/15/15  Take out journals and pick up only one handout per 2 people! Bell-Ringer: Karyotype DNA Fingerprinting Intro brief notes Who Ate The Cheese?!?!?! lab Study Guide/SPMS Homework: Begin studying for test on Thursday!!

Bell-Ringer: 12/15/15 1.What is the gender of this karyotype? 2.Is the karyotype normal or abnormal? 3.If abnormal, what is the name of the disorder?

DNA FINGERPRINTING:

Everyone’s DNA sequences are different, except for young identical twins. What you may not know, is that in between your genes that code for proteins, you have portions of DNA that have ‘repeater segments’.

Everyone has these segments of repeats. Your repeats are inherited from your mom and dad…some of yours are the length of your mom’s and some are the length of your dad’s

There are enzymes called ‘restriction enzymes’ that scientists can add to a sample of DNA. They recognize repeating DNA sequences and they cut these segments out of your DNA.

These cut DNA segments are put into a gel and then separated in a process called Gel Electrophoresis. DNA is a slightly negatively charged molecule, so it will travel toward the positive end.

The smaller segments of DNA move faster toward the positive charge than the ‘heavier’, larger fragments.

The separated segments creates your DNA fingerprint. These are used to see relationships between individuals or to match to a crime scene. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

In paternity testing, the child’s fingerprint will partly match mom’s bands, and partly match dad’s bands.

In crime scene investigation, you look for the person’s exact DNA fingerprint match.

WHO ATE THE CHEESE?!?!  With your partner, complete the Who Ate The Cheese lab activity. You will be turning this in before the end of the period.  We will analyze the Crime Scene DNA together to begin.  When you finish, turn your lab into the bin. Take out your SPMS and fill in the column, “Do I need extra help with this topic?”
