A DVANCED H IGHER G EOGRAPHY Geographic Methods and Techniques

L ESSON STARTER Try and think of as many different methods that you know to gather information in Geography. (Hint – think about gathering technique questions from S3-S5) Write them down in your jotter.

L ESSON A IMS To find out how to properly conduct a traffic survey. To find out why we would want to conduct a traffic survey and the questions that it can help us answer.

T ASK 1 Talk with each other and try to come up with reasons for conducting a traffic survey. Write them down in your jotter.

R EASONS FOR CONDUCTING A TRAFFIC SURVEY. To find out how much traffic flows through a certain area. This can then tell us many things such as: How dangerous the area may be for traffic accidents. How much congestion an area may have. How much business and area of retail may get from people passing through. If an area could benefit from speed bumps or traffic lights. How much noise and air pollution an area might face. How high the car ownership is in an area.

C ONDUCTING A TRAFFIC SURVEY What factors do you have to take into account? Using the paper in front of you make a mind map of everything that you think you need to take into account.

What different types of traffic will you record? Where are you going to record your data? When are you going to record your data? Are you going to record the amount of pedestrians in the street? How long will you spend recording the traffic at one time? Should you mention the state of the street? Does it have pot holes etc. Should you measure the speed the traffic is moving at? Should some vehicles be valued more than others.

T RAFFIC SURVEY We are going to conduct a traffic survey in the local area. It is your task to plan and carry out the traffic survey.

O THER INFORMATION WE COULD GATHER The noise pollution of an area due to traffic. How would we do this? Decibel meter – this records the level of noise in an area. (We were going to go out and try this but the weather is not really good enough)

S PEED OF TRAFFIC IN AN AREA. How would we do this? Measure a set distance between two points. Use a stopwatch to time how long a car takes to get through those points. S= D ---- T

O THER TECHNIQUES You could take photographs of the area. You could then analyse and annotate these at a later date. Highlighting the main important points.
