The Department for Education research shows that: Reading helps children to achieve across the whole curriculum. It has been shown to be associated with empathy and increased social support.

Why we need your help as parents ½ of young people who read above the expected level for their age say that their parents encourage them to read. NUT

How can we work together to support children with their reading?

Regular reading Dfe 2015 Reading regularly at home and school is really important. They practice their phonic understanding until it becomes automatic, then they can comprehend texts.

Good questions to ask when you listen to or read a book to a child…

Listening to stories Learning to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out print. Through hearing stories, children are exposed to a rich and wide vocabulary. This helps them build their own vocabulary and improve their understanding when they listen. It’s important for them to understand how stories work as well. Even if your child doesn’t understand every word, they’ll hear new sounds, words and phrases which they can then try out, copying what they have heard. (Pearson)

Ideas to make them listen…

How can we, staff and parent/ carers encourage children to read? Reading yourself- be a role model. Making sure children are surrounded by books: you don't need hundreds of books at home, but make regular trips to the library or bookshop, not just to borrow books but to spend time together browsing and learning to make choices. In this way, reading becomes a habit. (Pearson)
