Mobile first! As simple as that? Hildegard Nortvedt, web editor Stockholm, August 13 hildegard.nortvedt@uis.no

UiS mobile site – m.uis.no More than 5 % of the web visits came from smartphones and tablets autumn 2011 We wanted to give easy access to information about our studies, the university, admission & application, student life etc., customized for mobile devices One step further than creating a fancy app, which means downloading for the user and difficulties with maintenance and changing of content for the university

UiS mobile site – m.uis.no Launched in January 2012 – the first website designed for smartphones in higher education institutions (HEI) in Norway January-April: Target group – Prospective students July-September: Target group – New students starting in August

How to tell the world about the baby?

m.uis.no in January

How many have visited m.uis.no? January 1-April 30 - 23 555 visits, 11 600 unique visitors, 80 300 pageviews July-August – July 1-August 8: 9 800 visits, 5 550 unique visitors, 34 250 pageviews – July 1-August 12: 11 700 visits, 6 230 unique visitors, 40 250 pageviews Total visits January 1-August 12: 45 000 visits, 19 880 unique visitors, 150 300 pageviews

UiS mobile site – m.uis.no m.uis.no gives us the opportunity to offer new students more accessible information than ever at their start of the studies: –A 19-year-old will never forget his/her mobile phone at home as they do with a brochure… For the first time the University of Stavanger has no brochure for new students

Going digital – saying it with a postcard

m.uis.no in August

QR – Effective marketing or useless hype?

Mobile sites - already yesterday’s news? The user pattern have already changed People expect to find the same content whether they are searching it from a mobile device or a computer The arguments for having a website designed for smartphones are simply weakened, only a few months after we launched m.uis.no…

Moving on - Responsive Web Design UiS’ ongoing web project: Developing www.uis.no www.uis.no –New information architecture –New interaction design –New design –Responsive Web Design Does RWD make m.uis.no redundant and the work wasted?

A jungle of channels and platforms 8 external websites and 2 internal UiS on iTunesU Learning Management Systems Several administrative systems to be integrated And I haven’t even mentioned Social Media… How many channels do we have to deal with? How many devices? And new technology is coming up constantly; these days it is Augmented reality (AR) Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer- generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. (Wikipedia)computer- generated

A jungle of channels and platforms Mobile first – still true, but for how long? How do we manage to create an integrated communication? Perhaps we have to ask ourselves more frequently the key question: What kind of information? For which target group? In which channel? Just to avoid «57 channels and nothin’ on»….
