How it was discovered: By heating chips of Potassium in a silica container and then washed away the residual by-products.

It surrounds us in forms of sand, building bricks, glass etc. It is present everywhere in the soil and water.
  In its crystalline form it is a silvery-gray metallic looking material that is brittle and strong.
In its amorphous (random) form it looks like a brown powder.
Silicon is a metalloid, an element with properties of both metals and non-metals.
