1 Silicon By: Paige Foster

2 General information about silicon:
Silicon is the 14th element on the periodic table. Si = Silicon Atomic Mass = It’s the 8th most abundant element in the universe by weight. Makes up almost more than 27% of the earth’s crust.

3 Discovered by who & when?
Discovered by: Jons Jacob Berzelius When Silicon was discovered: 1824 How it was discovered: By heating chips of Potassium in a silica container and then washed away the residual by-products.

4 14 facts about silicon video:

5 What is special about Silicon?
Melting point: 1410 °C Boiling point: 3265 °C Density: grams per cubic centimeter Today, silicon is produced by heating sand (SiO2) with carbon to temperatures approaching 2200°C. Silicon forms other useful compounds. Number of protons/electrons: 14 Number of neutrons: 14

6 Who is Silicon's best friend? What does Silicon gets along with?
Carbon Germanium Tin Lead Flerovium

7 Does not get along with? Silicon never occurs as a free element in nature.

8 Importance of Silicon:
Silicon is the missing element. Silicon is the second most abundant element on the surface of the earth. It surrounds us in forms of sand, building bricks, glass etc. It is present everywhere in the soil and water.   In its crystalline form it is a silvery-gray metallic looking material that is brittle and strong. In its amorphous (random) form it looks like a brown powder. Silicon is a metalloid, an element with properties of both metals and non-metals.

9 Physical and chemical:
Physical properties: are usually those that can be observed using our senses such as color, luster, freezing point, boiling point, melting point, density, hardness and odor. Chemical properties: Reactions to substances may be brought about by changes brought about by burning, rusting, heating, exploding, tarnishing etc.

10 Silicon Rap:

11 Things made out of silicon/Have silicon:
Glass lubricants electronic components solar panels a variety of medical equipment are made of silicon The majority of sand found around the world is composed mostly of silica, which is an oxide of silicon.
