Report from the Erlangen Meeting Uli Katz ECAP, Univ. Erlangen 05.10.2012 ANTARES collaboration meeting - KM3NeT day Bologna, 5. October 2012

U. Katz: Report from Erlangen Meeting 2 Agree on strategy for KM3NeT construction phase 1, using the available resources within their restrictions If not: Agree why there is no agreement Issues addressed: Technology Time lines MoU Participants: Marco Anghinolfi, Tasos Belias (observer), Edward Berbee, Tonino Capone, Marco Circella, Paschal Coyle, Eric Heine, Maarten de Jong, Uli Katz (chair), Paul Kooijman, Antoine Kouchner (tel.), Patrick Lamare, Daniel Lambert, Magalie Magne, Riccardo Papaleo, Paolo Piattelli, Mauro Taiuti, Claude Vallee Scope/aim of the meeting, participants

U. Katz: Report from Erlangen Meeting 3 Strings (France, NL, Romania, INFN): DOM prototyping & field tests PMT procurement Backbone cable validation Deployment technology (LOM) Towers (Italy, fall-back to “NuOne solution”) Preparation for production Sea-bed networks Toulon: In MEUST framework, for strings Capo Passero: For strings and towers Current activities

U. Katz: Report from Erlangen Meeting 4 22/06/2012 4 KM3Net meeting 2012 Erlangen - Edward Berbee - Nikhef Two assembly- tables for top hemisphere, pmt’s and electronics. Assembly of bottom hemisphere, pmt’s with bases and signal collection board Storage for components, sufficient for one day. Gel-filling for top-and bottom hemisphere + test before filling. Storage-buffer for ready and partly ready products. Test setup for both top and bottom- hemispheres. Assembly of dom’s, simple end check. Packaging and transport. Storage-buffer for empty (rolling) tables. DOM production site Edward Berbee

U. Katz: Report from Erlangen Meeting 5 Production Hall (available) 45 m x 3 m Sufficient light Tooling Vacuum equipment available Oil fill equipment available Temperature equipment for curing glue being prepared Personal tooling being collected Test tooling (OTDR, Voltage, etc.) available Procedures Assembly of the VEOC available Assembly of penetrator available Oil fill of VEOC available Acceptance tests (to trap assembly failures) being defined Production schemes 3Q12 Test cable (fibres under surveillance) (Atlantic at 5000m and/or Toulon area; test programme being defined) 4Q12 Cable for 3 PPM-DOMs >4Q12: 4 x test cables for integration test programme with string/LOM Oil filling equipment Eric Heine

U. Katz: Report from Erlangen Meeting 6 Scope of work #20 storeys #8 m bar length #40 m distance between storeys #100 m distance between base and first storey #6 SOM on each storey #2 Hydro on each storey Oceanographic instrumentations on the tower structure Length of storey, inter storey distance, SOM location and orientation may be adjusted to optimize physics Riccardo Papaleo

U. Katz: Report from Erlangen Meeting 7 JJD Catane 20/02/2012 3500 V, 44 KW 3100 V, 38 KW 26 KW 25 KW 13 KW 12 KW Tendering for MEOC procurement and (MEOC+node) deployment completed. Last discussions ongoing with ALCATEL and France Telecom Marine. Order to be placed before 22/08/12 Power transport optimized in consulation with external company Checked at full load with simulation of final components 12 KW effective per node, 9 KW for DUs 500W / user port Claude Vallee

U. Katz: Report from Erlangen Meeting 8 Scope of work SJB#1 SJB#2 SJB#3 SJB#4 Primary JB 8 Outputs Capo Passero Termination Frame Capabilities: 20 Optical Fibers G 655 10 KV 50 kW 8 Outputs Riccardo Papaleo

U. Katz: Report from Erlangen Meeting 9 Italian (sub)project financed through ERDF/Sicily (PON): 20 M€ must be spent by March 2015 Installation must exist (?) at same time scale (?) France, Netherlands: Mixed technology unacceptable for MoU Germany, Romania: Mixed technology may be adverse to funding prospects Romania: MoU needed to secure/release money Strategic constraints

U. Katz: Report from Erlangen Meeting 10 The string design is considered as the baseline KM3NeT detection unit subject to its validation; Italian groups will contribute to the validation of the string detection unit; The Italian PON budget will be used for a seafloor network at the Capo Passero site, and several detection units (towers and strings); the seafloor network will be designed to be compliant with both strings and towers; The seafloor network at the Capo Passero site will accommodate an additional number of strings produced by the KM3NeT Collaboration, at least equal to the number of strings realized with the PON budget; The tower construction will be planned in a staged way in order to switch to the string design at any time and as soon as it has been validated; The French budget for a neutrino telescope in the scope of the KM3NeT- MEUST project will be used to realize a shore station, a seafloor network in the Toulon area and several string detection units; The seafloor network at the Toulon site will be designed to accommodate string detection units; The Netherlands and Romania budgets will be used for the construction of string detection units. The agreement

U. Katz: Report from Erlangen Meeting 11 Current management election process is stalled Search committee (Paschal Coyle, Els de Wolf, Mauro Taiuti) have been asked to manage path towards MoU and first elections under this MoU Time scale: “agreed” MoU draft by October 2012 (optimistic), latest end-2012 MoU should be open to partners who have no secured funding as yet (in-kind contributions, etc.) Part of the NL money will be used to install ERIC in Amsterdam Towards management and MoU
