SWBAT: - Define Statistics - Distinguish between a population and sample - Distinguish between a parameter and statistic - Distinguish between descriptive and inferential statistics Agenda: - Discuss Data, Population, Sample - Discuss a Census - Explain Descriptive and Inferential Statistics - Assign Homework

The study of how to collect, organize, analyze, and interpret numerical information from data.

Data Information that comes from observing, counting, measuring, or responses Raw Data Data in the order which it is collected, before it is organized, ranked, or grouped. Sometimes referred to as ungrouped data.

Population - Collection, or set, of individual, objects, or events whose properties are to be studied (Hint: Key words All, Every ) Sample - A portion of the population selected for study All Brooke Point Students (Population) Statistic Students (Sample)

Sample Survey - Collecting info from a portion of the population Representative Sample -A sample that closely represents the characteristics of a population Ex: Male and Females Young and old Caucasian, African American, Asian, Hispanic, etc.. Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior *** Any decisions based on a sample survey will not apply to the corresponding population unless the results closely match the results that would be obtained by a census

Example: In a survey, 524 Brooke Point students were asked if they intended to go to the first home football game. Two hundred and thirty-seven of the students said yes. Identify the population and the sample. Describe the sample data set. Population:All Brooke Point students Sample: The 524 students asked about going to the game Sample Data Set:The 237 people who said yes and the 287 who said no

Parameter the numerical description of a population characteristic Statistic the numerical description of a sample characteristic Are the following numerical values describing a population parameter or a sample statistic? In a survey of people living in Washington D.C. the unemployment rate was 10.2% 77% of Brooke Point seniors will participate in the graduation ceremonies Sample Statistic Population Parameter

Census -A survey that includes every member of a population ***Expensive and Time Consuming*** -Shows increase/decrease in US population -Shows increase/decrease in state populations -Effects congressional districts -US Housing numbers -Income levels -Populations by race -Determines how public funds are distributed

Types of Statistics Descriptive Statistics: - Consists of methods for organizing, displaying, and describing data by using tables, graphs, and summary measures Inferential Statistics: - Methods that use sample results to help make decisions or predictions about a population.

Example: A study done in 1980 by Halpern & Coren found that left-handed people’s average age of death was 66; right-handed average age was 75. Descriptive Statistic Statements: - left handed people live to average age of 66 - right handed people live to average age of 75 Inferential Statistic Statement: - Right handers live an average of 9 years longer than left handers - It must stink to be left handed!! Study was found to have errors!!

Homework: Pg 6 # 6 – 42 even
