SOLAR SYSTEM THEMATIC UNIT Based on the sixth grade science core, students will understand the relationship and attributes of objects in the solar system.

Overview of my class and school  21 6 th grade students at Silver Mesa Elementary School  11-12 year olds  3 ADHD students and 1 deaf student  All of my students have access to the internet  1 student’s family speaks Spanish in the home  30% of students at our school have free or reduced lunch  Tardy’s are not an issue anymore in my classroom

Prerequisites  Before teaching the Solar System unit, the students need to know what the 9 planets are.  Students need to know the order of the planets  Students need to know what the difference between the Solar System and the Universe is  Students need to have a basic understanding of what the Solar System is  Students need to know how to make a basic bar graph  Students need to know how convert units of measure  Students need to know how the distance formula  Students need to know how to read  Students need to know how to look up a definition  Students need to know how to write complete sentences  Students need to know the basic layout of a paper (introduction, conclusion, 3 paragraphs with their reasons)

Design  Goals and Objectives:  Students will understand the physical characteristics of the Earth’s solar system and planets. Students will be able to do this while incorporating the subject areas science, social studies, English language arts, and mathematics  Math:  Standard 4: Objective 2: Identify and describe measurable attributes of objects and units of measurement, and solve problems involving measurement.  C. Compare a meter to a yard, a liter to a quart, and a kilometer to a mile.

Design  Science:  Standard 3: Students will understand the relationship and attributes of objects in the solar system.  Objective 1: Describe and compare the components of the solar system.  Objective 2: Describe the use of technology to observe objects in the solar system and relate this to science's understanding of the solar system.  Objective 3: Describe the forces that keep objects in orbit in the solar system.  Social Studies:  Standard 4: Students will understand current global issues and their rights and responsibilities in the interconnected world.  Objective 1: Analyze how major world events of the 20th century affect the world today.

Design  Language Arts:  Writing Standard 2:  b. Develop the topic with relevant facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples.  Speaking and Listening Standard 1:  Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.  Literature Standard 1:  Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Overview of Thematic Unit (Development)  Day 1  KWL chart and “Planet and Space Travel” Movie  Day 2  YouTube Video and Planet Notebooks  Day 3  Working on Planet Notebooks  Day 4  Presenting Planet Notebooks  Day 5  Distances Chart and Graph  Days 6 & 7  Planet Posters to scale  Day 8  YouTube Video on Constellations and Constellation Crossword  Day 9  Jeopardy Review  Day 10  Assessment

Evaluation & Pros and Cons  Things I would change to this unit:  MORE Time!!!  The order I taught the lessons  Pros:  It really made me think out each and every day of my unit  I knew exactly what I was going to teach  Cons:  I hate putting time limits on things  Very redundant

Pros and Cons to the ADDIE Model  Pros:  It really made me think out each and every day of my unit  I knew exactly what I was going to teach  Cons:  I hate putting time limits on things  Very redundant
