FINAL PROJECT: PERSUASIVE SPEECH SINGLE MOTHERHOOD BY MARÍA MELÉNDEZ PROFESSOR:MARY ANN TOLEDO

THE CONCEPT OF FAMILY The concept of a family has changed in the last decades. We understand the concept of family as mom, dad and kids. It has been said that kids who are raised by both parents usually when they grow old they will raised their own family as they were raised themselves. The situation where mom have to take care of all the needs and step up to be dad as well as mom could be very challenging.

BACK IN THE DAYS A few decades ago, being a single mom, was seeing as a disgrace. Back in the days no women could be seeing left alone with her children without a man to support or just have that father figure. According to Ohio State University, children who grow up in a single-mother household have more problems than children who grow up in two-parent households. The problem is not so much the lack of a father and it is the lack of a second parent. I strongly disagree in the sense that a single mother can be a mother, a worker and a student all at the same time. I was raised by a single mother and I have become a good human been, but most of all a good daughter, mom and friend.

POINTS OF VIEW… First of all let’s see the point of view of mom being a worker. Now days the father is not the usual parent who stays put and pays the child support money, so the mother in many ways have to provide by herself for her children. Having in most cases to have more than one job, this makes her a full time worker. As the part of mom being a student, we can see many single mothers going to school to achieve a degree that can improve her living. It is hard work to work and study at the same time, but many women meet their goal. I strongly think that being raised by a single mother will not definitely be a problem to her kids. It all depends on the self-esteem the mother has and reflects it on her children combined with a strong support system at school and with her family it can be done.

WHAT I BELIEVE… I believe that if your child sees you working hard and at the same time being a student trying to make it better for yourself and for them, they can definitely become a successful human been. It is what your children see in you and see you doing. Like what my mom used to say “be careful where you’re walking, because there are little ones walking your steps”. I am a single parent and I am proud to say so. My medals are my kids, I am a full time worker in charge of an emergency room department and also a student. I know that at the end it will pay off, all the hard work, but most of all the good example that I gave my children they will see my effort and will imitate the courage and appreciate all the good things, especially not the material things, but the time, love and dedication spend together. I love my kids above all.

THE BEST THING !
