2 The Steps 1.Find the terms with a variable. 2.Move the variable with the lowest coefficient to the opposite side of the equation using inverse operations. 3.Combine the like terms. 4.Solve the remaining (multi – step) equation.

3 Examples 1) 5x – 3 = 2x + 12 -2x 3x – 3 = 12 +3 +3 3x = 15 3 3 x = 5 2) 5b – 8 = 9b – 10 -5b – 8 = 4b – 10 +10 +10 2 = 4b 4 = b

4 Examples 3) 12g = 9(g+.25) 12g = 9g + 2.25 -9g 3g = 2.25 3 3 g =.75 *Apply the distributive property - Then solve

5 Examples 4) 6m – 5 = 7m + 7 – m 6m – 5 = 6m + 7 -6m – 5 = 7 This equation has no solution *Combine like terms - Then solve If you get a solution where two numbers are left, and they do not equal each other, that equation has no solution.

6 Examples 5) 10 – 8x = 2(5 – 4x) 10 – 8x = 10 – 8x + 8x + 8x 10 = 10 *An equation that is true for every value of x is an identity If you get a solution where two numbers are left, and they do equal each other, that equation has infinite solutions.
