Adding Integers

We work DOWN, not across.

Additive Inverse any 2 numbers whose sum is zero opposites are additive inverses

What is a sum? the answer to an addition problem sum

The additive inverse of…… 4 is … 9 is … -61 is … -367 is … -4593 is … 7 / 9

Adding Numbers with the Same Sign Add the numbers and keep the sign. Ex. 1) 5 + 37 Ex. 2) (-62) + (-13)

Adding Numbers with Different Signs To add numbers with different signs, simply find the difference between the numbers and use the sign of the number further from 0 (the difference is the answer to a subtraction problem)

Adding with Different Signs Ex. 3) 6 + (-4) zero pairs

Adding with Different Signs -14 + 10 10 + (-14) 14 – 10 - 4

Practice (Same signs—add & keep)

More Practice **Different signs

Same signs add and keep, different signs subtract. Keep the sign of the further number, then you’ll be exact. (to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat)
