BING-TC-2009-05-26 CEN/TC88-WG6 PU boards Robert Walter 26/05/2009 BING 09/139

2 Revision EN 13165 New draft document WG6-N 758 Foreword (new environmental sentence) The reductions in energy used and emissions produced during the installed life of insulation products exceeds by far the energy used and emissions made during the production and disposal processes. Definitions (new) facing functional or decorative surface material with a thickness of less than 3mm, e.g. paper, plastic film, fabric or metal foil, which is not considered as separate thermal insulation layer to be added to the thermal resistance of the product

3 Revision EN 13165 New draft document WG6-N 758 Definitions (new) composite insulation product product made from two or more layers bonded together. At least one layer shall be a factory made thermal insulation material. Bonding includes both chemical and physical adhesion. The product may be faced or coated. multi-layered insulation product product made from two or more layers of a thermal insulation material from the same EN standard, which are bonded together either horizontally and/or vertically. Bonding includes both chemical and physical adhesion. The product may be faced or coated.

4 Revision EN 13165 New draft document WG6-N 758 Definitions (new) rigid polyurethane foam (PU) family of rigid cellular thermoset polymeric insulation products with a substantially closed cell structure including both polymer types based on PIR and PUR PIR rigid cellular thermoset polymeric insulation product with a substantially closed cell structure based on polymers mainly of polyisocyanurate groups PUR rigid cellular thermoset polymeric insulation product with a substantially closed cell structure based on polymers mainly of polyurethane groups

5 Revision EN 13165 New draft document WG6-N 758 Dynamic load resistance (new) Dynamic load resistance under walkability exposure shall be determined in accordance with prEN 13793. The deformation (%) at defined stress level and after the applied load cycles shall be declared. No test result shall exceed the declared value. We are working on a proposal to amend EN 13793 together with EPS. Perlite is also interested. Emissivity of product surface (new) NOTE A test method is under development by CEN/TC89 and will be added when available.

6 Revision EN 13165 New draft document WG6-N 758 Annex B ITT and Factory production control (FPC) Table B.1 – Minimum product testing Minimum number of tests for ITT Minimum testing frequency for FPC Thermal resistance and thermal conductivity: 4 ITT and 1 per day for FPC Reaction to fire of the product: 1 test for ITT Compressive stress/strength: only 1 test for ITT (and not 4 as proposed by WG16) and 1 FPC per day Tensile strength: only 1 test for ITT and 1 FPC per 5 years Compressive creep: only 1 test for ITT and 1 FPC per 10 years

7 Revision EN 13165 New draft document WG6-N 758 Annex C – ageing – proof for gas tight facing NOTE 1The diffusion tight property of a facing can also be proven, if the oxygen transmission rate is less than 4,5 ml per 24 h per m 2 when measured at (23  3) °C in accordance with ASTM D 3985 [1]. It will be demonstrated by taking ten facing specimens at the production site of the insulation manufacturer to be tested with no single result exceeding the limit value of 4,5 ml per 24 h per m 2. The specimens are placed in the test apparatus at (23  3) °C and (50  10) % relative humidity with the side, which will be foamed, faced towards the nitrogen chamber and with the edges of the facing unsealed against lateral air infiltration.

8 Revision EN 13165 New draft document WG6-N 758 Annex C – ageing – gas tight facing Requirement for using fixed increments: - the dimensions of rectangular products which have diffusion tight facings are not less than 600 mm  800 mm. If both longitudinal edges (min. length 800 mm) are covered by the gastight facings, the width of the product can be less than 600 mm.

9 Revision EN 13165 New draft document WG6-N 758 Annex C – lower fixed increments for thicker boards with diffusion open facings Blowing agent Nominal thickness d N < 80 mm 80 mm  d N < 120 mm 120 mm  d N < 160 mm 160 mm  d N < 200 mm d N ≥ 200 mm Pentane5,8 mW/mK 4,8 mW/mK 3,8 mW/mK 2,8 mW/mK 1,8 mW/mK We have to show proof to CEN/TC88.
