1 LO: I will explain Peter Singer’s approach to Utilitarianism H/W: Remember, assessment next lesson 10 th

2  It will be 45 mins long in total.  There will be a Part A question (AO1 Knowledge and understanding) which will be out of 25 marks.  There will be a Part B question (AO2 Evaluation and opinion) which will be out of 10 marks.

Mill: Qualitative, Pig philosophy, Eudaimonistic, Elitist (competent judge), Rule and Weak Utilitarian. An example to clarify.  Linking sentences – use language from the question in your paragraphs to link what you say to the question  Refer to mark scheme

5  Moral actions are right or wrong according to how they fit the preferences of those involved. Everyone’s preferences or interests are weighed equally.  Singer argued that the right thing to do is what is in the best interests of the greatest number, rather than simply the result of calculating pleasure against pain.  Singer sought a way of decision-making which would take into account the views of minorities.  E.g killing a person who prefers to go on living would be wrong, even if killing them would result in more people being saved. For debate: Do you agree that attempting to maximise people’s preferences takes into account minority views?

Go back and re-read the handouts previously given In groups, you will gather information to present everything that you have learnt about the following: Principle of Utility Bentham (Hedonic Cal, Quantitative, Egalitarian, Act & Strong) Mill (Pig Philosophy, Qualitative, Eudaimonistic, Rule & Weak) Singer (Preference utilitarianism) Strengths and Weaknesses of Utilitarianism Remember to include and explain terminology learnt, and to use examples. Be as creative as you like when it comes to presenting.
