2 The United Kingdom The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is historically divided into 4 parts and each part has its capital: England – London; Scotland – Edinburgh; Wales – Cardiff; Northern Ireland – Belfast. Great Britain is a country of forests and plains. As the country is surrounded by many seas there are some great ports at the seaside: London, Glasgow, Plymouth and others. Great Britain is a beautiful country with old traditions and good people.

3 England, the central part, occupies the most of the island of Great Britain. Borders: Scotland in the north; washes by the North Sea in the east; Separated from the continent by English Channel in the south; Wales in the west. Highest part is in the west. The Atlantic Ocean washes the rocky and broken west coast of England, Wales and Scotland. On the east coast the land is low and sandy. England

4 Scotland Scotland is the most northern part of the United Kingdom. Scotland is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and west and by the North Sea in the east. Geographically the territory of Scotland can be divided into 3 regions: the Northern Highlands, the Central Lowlands and the Southern Uplands. Scotland is the most mountainous in this country. It has the most famous lake in the world – Loch-Ness. Scotland

5 Wales Wales is a peninsula washed by the sea on 3 sides: the Bristol Channel in the south, the St. George’s Channel in the west, and the Irish Sea in the North. Geographically Wales may be considered part of Highland Britain, the Cumbrian Mountains occupying most of the land. It is an area of high mountains, deep valleys, waterfalls and lakes. 6 Northern Ireland Northern Ireland occupies the north- eastern part of Ireland, which is separated from the island of Great Britain by the North Channel. In the south-west Northern Ireland borders on the Irish Republic. Almost all the area of Northern Ireland is a plain of volcanic origin, deepening in the centre to form the largest lake of the British Isles, Lough Neagh.
