Objectives: 1.Find the probability of a Simple Event 2. Determine the outcome of an experiment 3. Predict which events are likely or unlikely.

Probability is always expressed as fractions, a decimal, or a percent between 0 and 1.

Determine the likelihood of each event. 1)Flipping a coin to get tails. as likely as not 2) Rolling a die to get a 4. unlikely 3) Rolling a die to get a 7. impossible 4) Rolling a die to get a number less than 8. certain 5) Mrs. Brown likes sweets. What is probability that she will choose a cupcake. likely

Write likely, unlikely, as likely as not, certain, or impossible for each of the questions. 1)Spinning the number 4. unlikely 2) Spinning a number less than 5. as likely as not

3) Spinning a number greater than 2. likely 4) Spinning an even number. as likely as not Write likely, unlikely, as likely as not, certain, or impossible for each of the questions.

5) Spinning a number less than 4. unlikely 6) Spinning a number greater than 10. impossible

Write likely, unlikely, as likely as not, certain, or impossible for each of the questions. 7) Spinning a number divisible by 3. unlikely 8) Spinning an odd number divisible by 4. impossible

Probability of Simple Events

Sample Space Determine the sample space and the outcome for each event shown. Sample Space: {Heads, Tails} Outcome: Heads Sample Space: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} Outcome: 5

John has a bag that consists of 3 red, 4 white, and 2 blue marbles. John decides to pull out one marble. Sample Space -the possible results that can occur. How many possible outcomes are there?

1)Write the possible outcomes for tossing a penny. heads and tails 2) Write the sample space for rolling a six-sided die. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 3) Write the sample space for pulling a shape out of a bag that has 2 triangles, 1 hexagon and 3 squares. Triangle, triangle, hexagon, square, square, square

Complementary Events Two events are complementary if their intersection is the empty set and their union is the set of all possible outcomes. The sum of probabilities for complementary events always equals 1.

Probability of an Event Not Occurring P(event A does not occur)=1-P(A) P(A)+P(not A)=1 On the average 8 out 10 people like ice-cream. What is the probability that a person does not like ice cream? P(not liking ice-cream)=1−P(liking ice-cream) =1−0.8=0.2

Probability involves predicting future events based on one of the following… There are two types of Probability: 1) Possible Outcomes (Theoretical) 2) Frequency of past events. (Experimental) Often used as definition for Probability

A man has two pair of pants. BlueBlack

He has three shirts. DarkLightStriped

How many different ways can he dress?

Six ways.

blue pants? How many ways can he wear blue pants? 3

a dark shirt? How many ways can he wear a dark shirt? 2

a striped shirt and dark pants? How many ways can he wear a striped shirt and dark pants? 1

a striped shirt or dark pants? How many ways can he wear a striped shirt or dark pants? 4

light shirt)? What is P(light shirt)? = 2 / 6 2 / 6 = 1/31/31/31/3

black pants)= P(black pants)= 3/6 3/6 3/6 3/6 = 1/21/21/21/2

A boy has a jar marbles.

He has three red, five blue, and two yellow.

What is the probability of drawing a red? red) = 3 / 10 P(red) = 3 / 10.30 = 30% =.30 = 30%

What is the probability of drawing a blue? blue) = 5 / 10 P(blue) = 5 / 10 1 / 2.50 = 50% 1 / 2 =.50 = 50%

What is the probability of drawing one that is not red? not red) = 7 / 10 P(not red) = 7 / 10.70 = 70% =.70 = 70%

1/61/61/61/6 What is the probability of rolling a 4 on one die?

What is the probability of spinning a 2? 2/62/62/62/6 = 1/31/31/31/3

red What is the probability of spinning red ? 1/31/31/31/3
