10 Biological Levels of Organization At each new level there are emergent properties… Molecules – clusters of atoms Organelles – membrane bound structures with a specific purpose Cells – smallest unit of life Tissues – groups of cells Organism – individual living thing

11 Biological Levels of Organization Population – group of organisms living in the same area Community – populations that live together in a defined area Ecosystem – community and its nonliving components Biosphere – The part of Earth containing all ecosystems

12 Looking at the Smallest Unit of Life Microscopes - devices that produce magnified images of structures that are too small to see with the unaided eye.

13 Compound light microscopes allow light to pass through the specimen and use two lenses to form an image. To study even smaller objects, scientists use electron microscopes.
