4 Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org Funding Global Connectivity to the developing world receives generous funding support from the European Commission In the developing world this is done through DEVCO; in the European Neighbourhood through DG NEAR Up to 80% European Commission funding for the developing world Up to 95% European Commission funding for the European Neighbourhood Counter-contribution is collected from the regional partners – no GÉANT contribution Connectivity to the developed world is based on equal cost-share or reciprocity Manpower Provided through the GÉANT International Relations Team at 4FTE (Project management and Project Visibility) – funded entirely through the international projects Reporting: Regular Quarterly Reports on all international activities are available through the GN4 –NA1 Intranet 4 How is global connectivity funded?

Initially supporting Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan with 4.5M Euro EC budget; Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan invited to join EUMEDCONNECT Current phase being extended to 2019 and DG NEAR funding being increased to 60%; supporting Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine BELLA (Building Europe Link to Latin America) BELLA aims to procure and operate spectrum on a direct submarine cable between Europe and Latin America, and roll out a 100Gbps network in Latin America. 24 Networks ∙ Services ∙ People www.geant.org Global Network Architecture (GNA) The GNA is: an “architecture” to facilitate more cooperative interaction among R&E networks in the delivery of network services to the global R&E community Achieved by the global R&E Network community contributing resources to: Defining a blueprint that R&E Networks can use to align their investments in intercontinental circuits To ensure that: R&E Networks can better meet the expectations and requirements of their member institutions and funders, and have more service for the same amount of money by Co-investing Sharing resources Levering each other’s services
