2 Please write this learning target in your planner: Learning Target  I will preview goals, big ideas and vocabulary for Unit 1. Practice Activities  I will respond to a visual prompt.  I will read and understand the goals and contents.  I will make connections to the concept of change.  I will evaluate my understanding of the vocabulary. Success Criteria  I will be clearer about how change has affected my life.  I will be more familiar with the vocabulary.

4  Turn to page 1  Look at the photo Think about the changes you have experienced in your own life. physical mental emotional spiritual Pair-Share with your table partner.  Respond to the question in your journals.  Don’t forget to write “response to picture” in the table of contents

6 Oedipus traveled to the town of Thebes. There he was met by the great Sphinx. The Sphinx sat in front of Thebes and asked everyone who came there a riddle. If you could answer it, the Sphinx let you go, but if you could not answer the riddle, then the Sphinx ate you. Nobody ever knew the answer. This was the Sphinx's riddle: What goes on four feet in the morning, two feet at noon, and three feet in the evening? When Oedipus answered the riddle correctly, the Sphinx was so upset that she killed herself.

7 Turn to page 2. Read the goals for the unit and mark words you are unfamiliar with. Explain to your table partner what you done in previous grades that will help you be successful to meet these goals.

8  Please read the section “Making Connections” quietly to yourself.  What does this paragraph say? (class discussion)  In your journals, please answer the Essential Questions.  Enter in the table of contents “Essential Questions 1.1”  Pair Share your answers with your table partner.

9  Listen carefully as I pronounce each of the vocabulary words.

10 Follow along with me as I read Introducing the strategy: QHT Questions Heard Teach Read “Developing Vocabulary” Turn back to page 2 and label each term Q, H, or T.
