2 Knitting way back when. The word Knitt is taken from knot and Originally from the Old English cnyttan, to knot. One of the earliest known examples of knitting was cotton socks with stranded knit colour patterns found in Egypt. (end of the first millennium) In 1527. The first knitting trade guild was started in Paris.it was an Originally a male-only occupation. knitting "by hand" became a craft used by country people that could easily access fibre. While the for the country people it became a necessary craft, for the wealthy it became a leisure activity similar to quilting, spinning, and needlepoint.

4 The practice is believed to have originated in the U.S. with Texas knitters trying to find a creative way to use their leftover and unfinished knitting projects, but it has since spread worldwide. Magda Sayeg, 37, from Houston has been found to have started this movement. Resulting in a new form of street art, lunching knitting back in to the 21 st century. In 2008 innocent smoothies had an idea, so they asked all different age groups to knit little hats and posted the pattern on line, then they put those little woolly hats on there smoothies and for every bottle sold,, 30c goes directly to Age Action. 8 Nick Cave Nick Cave was born in 1951 in Fulton, Missouri, USA. He is an American mixed media sculptor, dancer and performance artist. His most noted sculptures are his soundsuits, these are wearable fabric sculptures that are vibrant, bright and other worldly. He currently lives in Chicago and he is the director of the graduate fashion program at School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Nick Cave uses bright combined materials such as sequins, twigs, feathers, knit pieces, buttons, beads, wire, metal, pattern fabric, and strings.

15 The aim of this workshop The aim of this workshop is to show you how you can use knitting in an unconventional modern way. I am going to teach you the basic knit stitch and I will show you a rang of unusual materials to knit with. My main focus is on the materials used such as wire, string, plastic and fabric. I want you to think out side of the box, think of how the knit could become 3D by incorporating structure and finishes such as varnish or ceramics. I will show lots of imagery to inspire the group.
