COMMON STRUCTURE FOR THIS EMMAUS COURSE 1.Introduction 2.The Prophets Name 3.Location/Time 4.The Theme of Book 5.Summary of Message

GOOD STARTING POINT Important to get a understanding on books we are less familiar with

THIS EVENING Will share briefly what I learned from three prophets Much more study can be achieved Plenty to learn about

POST EXILE 1.Haggai – 2 Chapters 2.Zechariah – 14 Chapters 3.Malachi – 4 Chapters

HAGGAI 1.Introduction – Repent! 2.The Prophets Name – Means festal or festive. Perhaps he was born on a great feast day? 3.Location/Time – Prophet of Judah at the time of Ezra 4.The Theme of Book – Simple and Practical. Focused on the rebuilding of temple 5.Summary of Message – 4 messages

MESSAGES Delivered four messages that were to exhort, stir up and motivate action Preached over a period of 4 months Zechariah and Haggai are from same era Messages preached during the same period Begins at the second year of Darius I

HAGGAI 1.First message (Ch. 1) Rebuke 2.Second message (2:1-9) Encourage 3.Third message (2:11-19) Reassurance 4.Fourth message (2:20-22) Zerubbabel

HAGGAI 1.First message (Ch. 1) Rebuke 2.Second message (2:1-9) Encourage 3.Third message (2:11-19) Reassurance 4.Fourth message (2:20-22) Zerubbabel

FIRST MESSAGE Important to remember the context The books of prophecy can sometime blend in together However Israel had just returned from captivity The temple remained unfinished Haggai was to challenge the Jews

HAGGAI CHAPTER 1 1 In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the L ORD came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying, 2 “Thus speaks the L ORD of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time has not come, the time that the L ORD ’s house should be built.”’”

HAGGAI CHAPTER 1 3 Then the word of the L ORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying, 4 “Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your panelled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?” 5 Now therefore, thus says the L ORD of hosts: “Consider your ways!

HAGGAI CHAPTER 1 6 “You have sown much, and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”

HAGGAI CHAPTER 1 7 Thus says the L ORD of hosts: “Consider your ways! 8 Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the L ORD. 9 “You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says the L ORD of hosts. “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house.

HAGGAI CHAPTER 1 10 Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit. 11 For I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labour of your hands.”

HAGGAI CHAPTER 1 12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the L ORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the L ORD their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the L ORD. 13 Then Haggai, the L ORD ’s messenger, spoke the L ORD ’s message to the people, saying, “I am with you, says the L ORD.”

HAGGAI CHAPTER 1 14 So the L ORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the L ORD of hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.

WHAT CAN WE LEARN? A number of challenging verses Difference between Promise and Principles Difference between Israel and Church We need to be focused on our church Remember that the church is not a building Verse 6 is still true today

HAGGAI CHAPTER 1 6 “You have sown much, and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”

PRACTICAL LESSON We all can fall in the trap of material possessions However we shouldn’t stop this serving God as our number one priority Life can be a challenge for us But God is always there

ZECHARIAH 1.Introduction – Youth (Zechariah 2:4) 2.The Prophets Name – Means Jehovah remembers 3.Location/Time – Rebuilding the Temple 4.The Theme of Book – Practical messages for Godly living & Predictive messages for Israel 5.Summary of Message – 4 messages

Zechariah 9:9fMatthew 21:6-9

ZECHARIAH 1.First message (1:1-6) Repent 2.Second message (1:7-6:15) Predictive Message 3.Third message (7-8) Practical Worship 4.Fourth message (9-14) Predictive Message

ZECHARIAH 1 1 In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the L ORD came to Zechariah the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying, 2 “The L ORD has been very angry with your fathers. 3 Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the L ORD of hosts: “Return to Me,” says the L ORD of hosts, “and I will return to you,” says the L ORD of hosts.

ZECHARIAH 1 4 “Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets preached, saying, ‘Thus says the L ORD of hosts: “Turn now from your evil ways and your evil deeds.”’ But they did not hear nor heed Me,” says the L ORD. 5 “Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever?

ZECHARIAH 1 6 Yet surely My words and My statutes, Which I commanded My servants the prophets, Did they not overtake your fathers? “So they returned and said: ‘Just as the L ORD of hosts determined to do to us, According to our ways and according to our deeds, So He has dealt with us.’”’”

MALACHI 1.Introduction – Doubt or Obedience 2.The Prophets Name – Means My Messenger 3.Location/Time – After Haggai and Zechariah (Nehemiah 13) 4.The Theme of Book – God’s rebuke over Israel’s sin 5.Summary of Message – 6 parts

MALACHI 1.Israel has doubted God’s Love 2.Israel has despised God’s Name 3.Israel has defiled God’s Law 4.Israel has disdained God’s Justice 5.Israel has disregarded God’s Tithes 6.Israel has discredited God’s Service

MALACHI We often think of Prophets talking about the future However often their message was relevant for the present Malachi was concerned to rebuke and warn Israel of their sin

HIS SUCCESS? No indication that people responded 400 years until birth of Jesus Results are not the responsibility of prophet His duty was to speak God’s word clearly to the people We can learn from Malachi

FINAL THOUGHTS Post Exile Prophets perhaps not the most famous But they were real people who faced real challenges They served God faithfully and proclaimed his word
