2 1. How do we check if we are delivering the standards? Through the Trust’s Integrated Governance structure  core standards allocated to sub-committees of the Board – “Domain Groups”  an executive director chairs each Domain Group  membership includes a PPI Forum member  responsibilities include providing assurance to the Trust Board and Audit Committee that Standards for Better Health are being met. This involves: identifying gaps against national criteria ensuring work is undertaken to address gaps spreading good practice This process is also undertaken by the 5 service directorates

(cont’d)  regular updates provided throughout the year by the Domain Groups and Service Directorates to the Trust’s Executive Management Team; Audit Committee; and Trust Board  year end assessment of compliance by Domain Groups and Service Directorates  year end assessment then considered by: Patient and Public Involvement Forum Overview and Scrutiny Committees Trust Executive Management Team Audit Committee Trust Board (for final “sign-off” of declaration)

5 1.(cont’d) Annual Health Check declaration 2006/07 C16 Information to Patients – ‘not met’ C5a NICE technology appraisals – ‘insufficient assurance’ C5b Clinical Supervision– ‘insufficient assurance’ Action Action plans agreed to address gaps during 07/08 Action plans monitored by relevant Domain Groups Regular updates to the Strategic Health Authority Progress checked by Healthcare Commission visit in December 07.

This year - 2007/08  The Trust is in the process of formulating the 2007/08 Annual Health Check declaration.  This is due to be submitted to the Healthcare Commission by 30 th April 2008.  Currently the Trust is considering the work undertaken during the year together with all available evidence.

7 2. (cont’d) Currently the Trust is in a position to evidence that it remains compliant with those core standards that were declared ‘met’ during 2006/07. Of the one ‘not met’ C16 Information – the Trust has allocated £50,000 for the printing and distribution of information leaflets that relate to core services e.g. Mental Health Act, Treatments, Equality and Diversity, Complaints. This process is currently underway. C5a NICE – ‘insufficient assurance’ – relevant technological appraisals have been prioritised and audit programmes established C5b Clinical Supervision – ‘insufficient assurance’ – considerable work has been undertaken in conjunction with Newcastle University A declaration of ‘compliant’ is under consideration against these standards.
