Learn ‘em Love ‘em Live ‘em

Safety Goggles Required

Danger or Poison

Don’t Do It Forbidden

Don’t Drink the Water

Radioactive Substance Present

Flammable Material Present

Corrosive Material

Biohazard Present

Definiton: Biohazard A biological agent that is a threat to human health or safety. Includes such things as: Infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses, etc Toxins or venom produced by a living thing Pieces of DNA, tissue, dead organisms, blood, or other bodily fluids Medical waste- Used bandages, etc.

High Voltage or Electrical Shock Hazard

Strong Magnetic Field

Hot Surface

Extremely Cold Substance (Cryogenic Substance)

Presence of a Laser

Tsunami Hazard

Weapons of Mass Destruction

NFPA Fire Diamond

NFPA Fire Diamond: Blue Diamond: Health Hazard How hazardous the substance is. 0 = Not dangerous to humans. 4 = Short exposure will cause immediate death or serious injury.

Red Diamond: Flammability How easily the material catches fire or burns 0 = Does not burn 4= Easily forms flammable vapors and easy to ignite (gasoline has a Flammability rating of 3)

Yellow Diamond: Instability How easily the material detonates or explodes 0= Stable, even under fire conditions 4= May explode under normal conditions, temperatures or pressures (eg TNT).

White Diamond- Special Hazards (No numbers, only symbols) Possible symbols: ox = oxidizer, a chemical that increases the rate of chemical reactions W = Reactive when mixed with water Other safety symbols may be found here also

Material Safety Data Sheets AKA- MSDS Sheets Contain information about a specific chemical Lists all information about reactivity, flammability, toxicity of a chemical Required everywhere a chemical is stored or used (except personal residences) Includes a NFPA “fire diamond”

Recyclable Material

For plastics, the recycling symbol generally has a number inside the arrows: These numbers and the letters below tell recycling plants what type of plastic the object is made of.

See additional safety symbols and their meanings on page 17 of textbook.
