MAKING STONE CASTS from RUBBER MOULDS

EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES Moulds Blue box with dividers

EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES Silky Rock ® 1 Package/mould

EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES Spatula and Water Syringe

EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES Smoothex ® Whip-Mix ® mixing bowl and hose

EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES Whip-Mix ® Vacuum Mixer

PROCEDURE Spray Smoothex ® into the mould being poured (maxillary or mandibular) Rinse lightly Shake mould of excess moisture/liquid

Test to insure there is adequate vacuum. Turn on mixer. The needle will move a little. Then put your finger over the end of the hose. If the pump is working, the needle will jump into the “green” zone, indicating vacuum at the hose tip. You will be instructed in further testing of the system.

Wet the bowl with water, then shake out the excess Follow instructions on the package of Silky- Rock ® –Do not rely on memory. Double- check the instructions.

Place water (from syringe) into your moist bowl Fluff package, then add powder. Mix the powder just enough to wet it (10-15 seconds)

With hose attached to lid and lid on the bowl, ensure vacuum is “in the green” Vacuum-mix for the prescribed time (20-30 seconds, usually)

Use vibrator to slowly flow the gypsum into a Smoothex ® - moistened mould Do not hurry the process. Let it run from one tooth to the next.

Continue filling until it is about ¼” from the top

Use remaining stone to create “lugs” Why lugs???

If you are impatient, this will probably be the result!! Small voids that are not in critical areas may be OK, but check with your bay instructor. These are BAD. You do not need to show them to anyone.

After approximately 45 minutes, the model can be removed from the mould –Again, consult the package for specifications.

Do not return the mould to its box (or stack the moulds) until they are dry!

Store dry casts in your blue box –Use the dividers to separate the casts. It prevents chipping.
