2. Objectives To understand the role of the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) and their part in using technological tools in addressing safety and the nursing shortage. Recognize how the ACNP can accommodate and create innovative ways to improve care for the net savvy patient. Identify the modalities the ACNP uses to resolve common human computer interface (HCI) issues.

The Role of the ACNP The ACNP “extends the traditional scope of nursing, involves highly autonomous practice, maximizes the use of nursing knowledge through the application of an expanded range of practical, theoretical, and research-based therapeutics, and contributes to the development of the profession and discipline” (Ruel & Motyka, 2009, p. 388).

4. Information & Communication Support Tools Two primary tools that may be utilized to enhance communication of information are the electronic health record (EHR) and the personal heath record (PHR). Helping the patient select the correct PHR, accessible to selective EHR features, will promote data cohesion.

Safety and the Nursing Shortage By adopting the PHR as part of their medical routine, patients can potentially increase their own health and safety. “PHRs can engage older adults for better medication self-management” (Chrischilles et al., 2014, p. 679). Additionally the PHR-EHR relationship can also limit the duplication of clinical tests, relieving a strain on nursing staff issues.

7. Accommodating the Net Savvy consumer means focusing on advocating for patient safety and providing education. Encouraging patients to safeguard their data and limit access of personal information to home networking use can foster safety. Creative Ideas for Net Savvy Consumers Promote the use of online support groups pertinent to the patient’s needs. “Participation in internet-based interventions reduce the prevalence of depression and perceived stress, significantly improves social support and information competence, and significantly improves self- perceived health status” (Hoybye, Dalton, Christensen, Ross, Kuhn, & Johansen, 2010, p. 553).

10. HCI Issues I: EHR & Patient Safety Unintended consequences of excessive EHR data alerts forced practitioners to ineffectively manage which alerts to focus on, leading to patient safety issues. The ACNP must utilize analytical capabilities to ensure that relevant data, most notably significant test results, are not disregarded, demonstrating that patient safety is paramount.

HCI Issues II: EHR & Data Integrity “ The copy-paste feature in your EHR system can help create a more complete record that details a patient’s condition,… however, this feature can negatively affect record quality if used excessively or unnecessarily” (HCPRO, 2014). The ACNP can corroborate to develop procedural guidelines for feature specifications, like a policy to enables users to cut-and-paste invariable data (such as verified patient allergies). This can save time and limit data corruption.

12. HCI Issues III: EHR & Patient Privacy “Patients may non-disclose to providers to protect against the perceived EHR privacy and security risks” (Campos- Castillo & Anthony, 2014, n. p.). ACNP must act to reduce the patient’s apprehensions regarding privacy and the EHR and advocate for privacy policies and procedures.

13. Conclusion A keen understanding of the issues that arise when merging information technology and human factors can help the ACNP in promoting optimal care. Assessing patient safety, data integrity, and patients’ privacy while utilizing information technology in the healthcare setting, the ACNP plays an important role in improving human factor issues that influence the advancement of modern healthcare.
