Agenda NOTES- Renewable Energy Sources Bubble map and stations What is happening in Duplin County? Exit Ticket

Renewable Resources I can compare ways humans get energy sources. I can explain sustainability.

ENERGY SOURCES

SUSTAINABILITY The quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance Supporting and upholding life with MINIMAL long- term effect on the environment

SUSTAINABILITY today March 26, 2015 Agricultural waste could be used as biofuel – Straw-powered cars could be a thing of the future thanks to new research. A new study pinpoints five strains of yeast capable of turning agricultural by-products, such as straw, sawdust and corncobs, into bioethanol -- a well-known alcohol-based biofuel.

Think… Why do we need to find alternative and sustainable sources of energy? Fossil fuels (nonrenewable) supply 90% of our world’s energy. At the present rate of consumption, the amount of fossil fuels available may last only another 170 years!!!

Problem Population increases  – consumption increases  pollution increases! How do we deal with this problem?

Alternative Energy Find safer, RENEWABLE energy Sustainable – will not run out – has very little negative effect on the environment

Renewable Energy Bubble Map

 Set up the bubble map/cut it out and glue it into your notebook (color later) 20 minutes  In groups of 3-4 students move through stations to collect the positives and negatives to renewable energy 3 minutes per station

5 NCFE QUESTIONS

Fossil fuels are seen by some scientists as a temporary (not long term) energy source. Which aspect of (thing about) fossil fuels encourages scientists to find other sources of energy production? a. It takes a very long time for fossil fuels to form. b. The burning of fossil fuels results in decreased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. c. Fossil fuels store energy for a short period of time. d. Fossil fuels are too expensive to produce.

Why is it important to develop alternative sources of energy? a. Petroleum (oil) will eventually use up all the oxygen needed for human survival b. Petroleum (oil) is being spilled into the ocean faster than it is being used c. Petroleum (oil) fails to store solar energy and contains limited chemical energy d. Petroleum (oil) is a limited source of energy that is almost impossible to renew

A local government is considering whether to build a dam. Which is an advantage of building this structure? a.It can decrease the accumulation of sediment in the water b.It can improve the natural habitat of plants and animals c.It is an inexpensive process d.It can create a storage place for water
