Information on seizures by law enforcement agencies or market observations by independent researchers Number and type of item (Skin, head, teeth, bones), if converted into garments or other products (coats, hat, rugs, wall hanging) were recorded. 5 TRAFFIC is a strategic alliance of and Total 1993-2002 = 260 Total 2003-2012 = 327 Minimum number of Snow Leopards in trade during the past 20 years (1993-2002 & 2003-2012) Preliminary Results Theile (2003) and Dexel (2002) provided much of our current knowledge about the snow leopard trade; however, this work has not been repeated in recent times.

7 TRAFFIC is a strategic alliance of and Constraints on collecting information on Snow leopard trade No Central database on seizures, trade or killing of snow leopard Difficulties in monitoring a secretive activity Available information is patchy Under CITES Resolution Conf. 12.5 (rev. CoP16) on Asian big cats, signatory countries are obliged to report on illegal trade issues concerning snow leopards, but none has yet done so.

8 TRAFFIC is a strategic alliance of and Next Steps on Snow leopard Illegal Trade Update information on poaching and illegal trade of snow leopards through consultation with snow leopard experts and organizations In-country market surveys, to accurately map “trade routes” and “trade hotspots” Analyze information and Inform government law enforcement efforts on combating snow leopard trade Incorporate recommendations into range-wide dialogues on snow leopard conservation, revision of Snow leopard Survival Strategy, national snow leopard conservation action plans, and regional trade initiatives Partner and coordinate with INTERPOL, SAWEN, CITES, NABU, CMS including links with China and Central Asia range countries, and the Bishkek Summit New forensic technologies should be incorporated TRAFFIC and WWF are seeking active co-operation from range countries, as well as transit and market locations, to update knowledge on snow leopard illegal trade
