To Recap: The Broad Areas of Learning (BAL) are Lifelong Learning Sense of Self Community and Place Engaged Citizens Why the BAL are important Mandated in curriculum documents Are key areas of learning we as desire for our students

Sometimes you eat the bar sometimes the bar eats you. Find power in curriculum Use curriculum to your benefit Don’t let curriculum control you

Plan of Action: Part One Division sponsored tools in your quiver to deliver curriculum and incorperate BAL when designing learning: Namely Destination Imagination (DI) What is DI? http://www.idodi.org/http://www.idodi.org/ To develop opportunities that inspire the global community of learners to utilize diverse approaches in applying 21st century skills and creativity. The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament.

DI Supports for 2014-2015 Division workshops being offered for the classroom edition grades 5-7. Division workshops being offered for the afterschool/lunch hour DI program DI days facilitated by the division for schools participating in the afterschool program Funds budgeted for supplies and materials

How to incorporate the BAL into specific curriculum Four volunteers please. Set up this tarp. Use your 4C’s to help you with this task

Part two: How to incorporate the BAL into specific curriculum Wildlife Management Objective 3.14 To demonstrate basic survival techniques (e.g. fire building, shelter building). In any given lesson look for opportunities to incorporate the Four C’s as discussed in The Leaders Guide to 21 st Century Education. Where appropriate bring attention to the these skills before, during, and after the lesson Use formative feedback to foster growth of the Broad Areas of Learner

The 2014-2015 Wildlife Management Project Create /purchase TRC supply kits to ensure teachers have required equipment to engage students. Provide workshops and sub time to Wildlife management teachers (or those that would like to start a Wildlife management class). Make the BAL a significant component in the delivery of the workshop; lead by example, learn to do by doing.

Data Collection? By the very nature of the BAL, data collection is going to be difficult. This is one area that will require further research and thought. We see potential in measuring growth in the 4c’s rather than the BAL such as is the learner a “life long learner” or an “engaged citizen”.
