Sony XEL-1 The Organic Display for the Future

Sony XEL-1 - OLED The product that uses OLEDs  Made out of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).  OLED requires less power to produce a high quality light.  Does not require a bulky backlight and therefore is thinner. Only 3 mm thick.  Provides a deeper black with a contrast over 1,000,000 to 1.  OLED has a 1 micro second response time; reducing blur while watching a fast moving sport event. Figure 1. (Sony, n.d.)

Sony XEL-1 - Bioplastic  This product is made with bioplastic.  These are plastics from renewable sources.  This Sony XEL-1 requires less materials because of the thinness of the screen.  The weight of the product is only 2.2 kg.  The use of bioplastic meets Sony’s environmental targets. Figure 2. (Sony, n.d.)

XEL-1 Cost  A large percentage of the cost is due to:  Materials used including bioplastics  The OLED panel (9.7” = $500 compared to LCD $90, April 2010 (Machackpc) )  However other areas contribute to the high cost:  The cost of Sony’s research, which is still continuing today.  From the graph above you can see the prices have changed over the years. This is due to the demand and the quantity that’s been produced. Due to the high cost of Sony’s XEL-1 when launched, the price was high as Sony believed that there was going to be a demand.  However the demand has since decreased with only a few people willing to pay out for such an expensive small screen television.  Sony has stopped production as they are still trying to sell their current stock, as there are still very few people who are willing to buy it.

 Sony meets the above target by:  Using OLED panels. (less energy/no backlight)  Using bioplastics.(renewable sources)  Less materials.  By designing the OLED state "When a single pixel is in an ‘off’ state it consumes no power at all". (Sony, n.d.) Sony Eco-Targets

 As talked about in the previous slide Sony has environmental friendly targets.  Sony XEL-1 has met some of these targets, first it promotes the Sony brand by manufacturing with materials from renewable sources.  It also met the targets, by using organic light emitting diodes as the screen display.  An additional advancement is that this product requires less materials to be manufactured, meaning less materials needed from the environment.  All of the above shows that Sony is trying to be environmentally responsible with their manufacturing processes.  But most of all, many people know that when you buy a product from Sony, it’s going to be a high quality electrical product from an experienced and highly respected manufacturer.  The XEL-1 is a product that has a high-quality screen display with a high contrast and a fast response time. There are also other benefits of reduced power, thinner screen and brighter display. The Brand Image Sony

 When a customer buys this Sony XEL-1 product, they are supporting the manufacturer that is being environmentally responsible.  However some people believe the high-price of this television is a lot compared to it being only a screen size of 11 inches. Customers Attitudes  When reading reviews like Monkref, I find that people are amazed with the high detail that they can see on the screen.

 The future of OLED technology can be wide.  Lately Sony has published it’s research on OLED display that can be rolled around a pencil. (Sony, 2010) Future of OLEDs  Figure 3. (Sony, 2010.)  By seeing the current research on the OLED technology, I can say that this product can be used for portable devices:  E-readers or e-books are a potential device that can benefit from using OLED technology. This is because OLEDs requires less power to operate and therefore will last longer on the portable device.  Other devices could be iPad, advertisement banners and picture frames. The use of OLED for other designs could be endless. As it provides so many benefits, its also has disadvantages, one being the cost of producing OLED panels.
