3 Answer: They are all animals! Characteristics of Animals: heterotrophic Eukaryotic multicellular lack cell walls. 95% = invertebrates (do not have backbone) 5% = vertebrates (have a backbone)

4 Animal Kingdom Phyla Phylum Cnidarian- invertebrates with stinging cells and take food into a central cavity. Examples sea anemones, jellyfish, hydra

5 Phylum Worms – simplest animals with a brain. Free-living PlanarianParasitic Tapeworm Flatworms – flat bodies

6 Phylum Annelida – segmented worms Phylum Nematoda – roundworms

7 Phylum Mollusca – invertebrate with soft, unsegmented bodies sometimes protected by a shell. Examples: snail, squid, oyster, clam

8 Phylum Arthropoda – exoskeleton, segmented body, pairs of appendages crustaceans, insects, spiders This is the largest phylum in the animal kingdom and contains the most number of species

9 Phylum Echinodermata – has an internal skeleton and fluid-filled tubes. Starfish, Sea urchins, sand dollars

10 Phylum Chordata – includes all vertebrates
