7  College paradox: Those who can least afford college, can most easily afford it.  Most financial aid is “need based”  Research and look for it  Colleges try to “balance” the incoming class  Wide range of skills, talents, activities, etc. What do you offer? Key Interview Coming - College

8  What majors do they offer that interest you?  What size college are they?  What size do you want?  Advantages of both large and small  What activities do they have that interest you?  Where are they located?  Do you like the area and what it offers? Research the College

9  Why should you be interested in them?  Why should they be interested in you?  Who will be interviewing you?  Research the people if you can – are they line managers or Human Resources?  LinkedIn, company website, journal articles, Yahoo Finance, internet search  What businesses and products do they have?  Prepare questions for them  Research typical interview questions  Google “top 10 interview questions”, “toughest interview questions”, “questions to ask potential employer” Research the Company

11  Two-minute summary – Tell me about yourself  Emphasize results, not just activities  What can you do for the company or new boss  What is relevant to them Questions to the Class

12  What would be the ideal job for you?  Tell me about the accomplishment which gave you the most personal satisfaction.  Why should I hire you?  Why are you the best candidate?  What do you know about our company?  Tell me about your best boss/teacher. Why did you like him/her? FAQ’s

13  Tell me about the toughest sale you ever made (or task you had to complete) and how you did it.  What do you want to be doing 10 years from now?  What is your greatest weakness? (What can you improve upon?)  You lack experience for this job. Why should I hire you? More FAQ’s

14  Varying opinions  Don’t get involved with salary in initial interview  Salary expectations?  “I’m sure you are competitive with the market.”  What is the salary range for this position?  What is included in total compensation?  401(k), matching program, bonus, stock options, health care, vacation, others? 15  Why do you think this is a great place to work?  What is a typical career path for someone in this job?  How do you evaluate performance? What would be outstanding performance in this job? What are the job expectations?  How do employees develop and learn? Training programs?  What is your personnel turnover rate? Why so high/low?  Why is this job open? What happened to the previous person?  May I talk with people I would work with?  How financially strong is the company?  Who are your major competitors and why are you better?  What is the long-term strategy for the company? What questions do you have for me? Time to find out about them on a personal level This question distinguishes a great interview
