2 STANDARD HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS Course requirements 4 English credits 4 Math credits One of which must be Algebra 1and one must be Geometry 3 Science credits One of which must be Biology 1 Two of three must have laboratory components. 3 Social Studies credits 1 World History 1 U.S. History.5 U.S. Government.5 Economics 1 Fine and Performing Arts credit 1 Physical Education credit.5 personal fitness Total of 24 credits Other requirements 1 Florida Virtual Class 3 hours of community service Unweighted 2.0 GPA Must pass 10 th grade ELA/FSA Algebra 1 EOC Requirement for a 4-year College or University: 2 years of the same foreign language.

3 WHAT TO DO IN THE SUMMER? College Applications open in July Review requirements – you may use College Board’s Big Future Tool and on the college’s website. https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/ Review application deadlines Develop a check list for each University/College you would like to apply to Look up scholarship opportunities Use Fastweb.com and CAP Corner on Killian website Sign up to CAP mailing list on Killian Website if you have not done so. Verify you are on track to complete all graduation requirements. Community Service Hours. You only need 3 for graduation but many scholarships require more.

4 APPLICATION How many? Students should apply to a variety of schools: 1.Safety 2.Good Match 3.Reach Check SUS Matrix on: Where? Various methods of acceptance: Holistic approach includes: Extra curricular, first generation, single parent, legacy leadership, initiative, low income, talent, community service, and obstacles Black and white SAT and GPA (rigor) i.e. FIU, USF, Penn State and many others When? Early decision (binding) Early action (non binding) Priority deadline Rolling decision (early bird gets the admission worm!) 5 TESTING SAT 2016/2017 Tentative test dates October 1st November 5 th December 3 rd January 21st March 11 th May 6 th June 3 rd New SAT You will not have a penalty for guessing Free practice on college board optional essay included. Conversion scales on College Board website. For 2017 graduates colleges will most likely be converting from old SAT to New SAT June Test results will be delivered July 21 st. ACT 2016/2017 test dates September 10 th October 22 nd December 10th February 11 th April 8 th June 10th Check out www.fairtest.org for test optional colleges.www.fairtest.org PERT testing for colleges. May be taken at Killian on select dates or Miami Dade College. Test waivers may be obtained from Mrs. Armengol in student services.

6 GRADES AND TRANSCRIPTS At the time of application the latest GPA will be the final Junior year GPA. Transcripts roll over two times a year. In February and in June. You apply with YOUR GPA of grades 9, 10 and 11 Colleges are looking for trend of improvement Increase in rigor Most deadlines are before Jan 20 of 2016.

10 WHEN AND HOW TO COMPLETE FAFSA Must complete the FAFSA every year to receive federal student aid Both the student and the parent need a FSA ID www.pin.ed.gov www.pin.ed.gov Students are encouraged to file their FAFSA as soon as possible starting October 1 st of their senior year in high school Transfer tax information directly into the FAFSA Takes 2-3 weeks for information to become available in Retrieval Tool Database Easiest way to provide tax information but NOT required Students should check their emails and regular mail for SAR report Update and make corrections to FAFSA if necessary Be proactive and follow-up with the schools for the award letter

12 SCHOLARSHIPS Posse Please see me before the 31 st. Raise.Me Follow Colleges and Universities before the end of the summer. Bright Futures Scholarship Initial Eligibility Requirements must be met prior to high school graduation. To apply for a Bright Futures Scholarship, you must submit a completed, error free Initial Student Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) during your last year in high school (after December 1 and prior to graduation). You must apply during your last year in high school, before graduation, or you will forfeit all future eligibility for a Bright Futures Scholarship.
