Commoratio …Say again?

Definition and usage Definition: Purposely repeating an idea over and over using different words each time. Usage: Best used for emphasis or to give a sense of scale. You will see this most often (probably) in comedy (or Shakespeare)

Monty Python "It’s not pinin’. It’s passed on! This parrot is no more! It has ceased to be! It’s expired and gone to meet its maker! This is a late parrot! It’s a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace! If you hadn’t nailed it to the perch, it would be pushing up the daisies! Its metabolical processes are of interest only to historians! It’s hopped the twig! It’s shuffled off this mortal coil! It’s run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible! This is an ex-parrot!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIrBMt4eiRk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIrBMt4eiRk (Start at 1:50)

E. B. White “On many days, the dampness of the air pervades al life, all living. Matches refuse to strike. The towel, hung to dry, grows wetter by the hour. The newspaper, with its headlines about integration, wilts in your hand and falls limply into the coffee and the egg. Envelopes seal themselves. Postage stamps mate with one another as shamelessly as grasshoppers.” From The Ring of Time Douglas Adams "Space is big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist’s, but that’s just peanuts to space. (From The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy 1952– 2001)

Monty Python (Again) “Brave Sir Robin ran away, Bravely ran away, away. When danger reared its ugly head, He bravely turned his tail and fled. Yes, Brave Sir Robin turned about, Undoubtedly he chickened out. Bravely taking to his feet, He beat a very brave retreat. Bravest of the brave! Sir Robin!” From Monty Python & The Holy Grail

Roald Dahl "'He’s gone off his rocker!' shouted one of the fathers, aghast, and the other parents joined in the chorus of frightened shouting. 'He’s crazy!' they shouted. 'He’s balmy!' 'He’s nutty!' 'He’s screwy!' 'He’s batty!' 'He’s dippy!' 'He’s dotty!' 'He’s daffy!' 'He’s goofy!' 'He’s beany!' 'He’s buggy!' 'He’s wacky!' 'He’s loony!' 'No, he is not!' said Grandpa Joe." (Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)

John Lanchester "With bad grace, [Shahid] had eventually conceded that [Iqbal] had to go. And then, yesterday, most amazing thing of all--he had gone! Moved out! Vamoosed! Iqbal was out of there! Elvis had left the building! The fat lady had sung! Mandela had been freed! Shahid had has life back!“ (Capital. 2012) M. Palise The baby was ugly. Ugly ugly. Coyote ugly. Stop a clock ugly. Scare the dog ugly. Curdle milk ugly. Inspire a miscarriage ugly. End a marriage ugly. Stephanie adored him.

Practice Pick three topics (eg – size, distance, time, appearance, etc) and expound on them. Explain them using commoratio. Use metaphor and simile to paint a picture for your audience. Extrapolate on various shades of meaning. Expose us to the different facets of the topic you have chosen. (See, like that.)
